January 28, 2021 -- Students from Grades 10 to 12 witnessed a webinar organized by the FilSocMATLE Department and the Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students entitled “Sheng Yin: Voices of the Youth on Art, Media, and Society".
Two guest speakers were invited to take part in the program. First was Prof. Cleve Arguelles, a Ph.D. candidate at the Australian National University and former assistant professor and chair of the political science program at the University of the Philippines. Second was Mr. Arniel Ping, founding board member and founding vice president of the Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL), and current overall academic coordinator of the high school department in St. Stephen’s High School.
Mr. Arguelles started his discussion with a question, "Are millennials abandoning politics?" He then discussed the ways Southeast Asian youths were reinventing political participation. He gave examples of different organizations using varieties of social media platforms. Its purpose was to encourage youth to engage in the social world and do politics differently outside the traditional sites.
Mr. Ping, on the other hand, discussed the ultimate goal of MIL (Media and Information Literacy) and the different types of information disorders, which included misinformation, disinformation, and Mal-information. He also illustrated the importance of being responsible in verifying information. He said, "The ultimate goal of MIL is to empower people to exercise their universal rights and fundamental freedom."
The Grade 12 HUMSS strand also prepared a video presentation to invite future senior high school students to join the HUMSS strand. An open forum moderated by HUMSS teacher Mr. Roberto Lim Jr. took place after both lectures to accommodate questions from the students and other audience members.
To close off the program, audience members were encouraged to take what they learned from the webinar and use their voices to make for a better society.
