AVIATION WORKSHOP HELD
by Marvin Andrew Co (11C - STEM) | April 27, 2022
Last March 30, 2022, the STEM seniors organized an aviation workshop webinar entitled ”Soaring Through Skies.”
The event was attended by Grade 10 students and senior high school STEM students. It featured two pilots, Mr. Jeremy Wilson O. Go and Ms. Marie Stephanie E. Buenafe, as guest speakers who shared their experiences as pilots and gave valuable insights into the career of a pilot.
In her opening remarks, main campus Vice President Dr. Sining M. Kotah mentioned, “This is something that shows us that STEM can bring us to places, and I am saying this both figuratively and literally.” She also told the audience that the event could open more options to consider in terms of choosing the strands in SHS and their careers in the future.
Mr. Go is a licensed commercial pilot flying for General Aviation and has an AB development studies degree from De La Salle University. He took his aviation training in OMNI Aviation Corporation. Ms. Buenafe is a freelance co-pilot on the King Air B200 and has completed a BS Psychology degree from the University of the Philippines. She completed her aviation training in the Philippine Airlines Aviation School and recently completed her master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology with a concentration in Training and Development from Adler University.
Go and Buenafe discussed the various careers in aviation and explained the process and requirements of becoming a certified airplane pilot. The guest speakers also shared their experiences of training and working as pilots. They then continued explaining various related elements about flying an airplane, such as the parts of an aircraft, the four forces of flight, radio communication, flight plan, weather, powerplant, and navigation.
Aside from the lectures, an intermission game was also held to test the knowledge of the audience on aviation-related trivia. There was also an open forum wherein students and teachers freely asked questions in the chat.
Science Coordinator Mr. Rodmar Joseph Corcuera concluded the program by giving his message of thanks. He expressed his gratitude to the guest speakers by saying, “Thank you for taking us into the world of aviation, and giving us a glimpse of the routines of pilots. Thank you for the knowledge you have shared with everyone, especially our students.” he also added.
The event was hosted by Francis Adrian Sy and Quincy Miguel Cai of 12C-STEM.
