Last March 22, 2022, Philippine Cultural College - Manila launched an online career talk entitled “Navigating the Transition: A Career Talk for Grades 9 to 10 students” via Zoom Video Conferencing.
The program started at 7:30 am and was attended by the Grades 9 to 10 students. It was moderated by SHS Head Teacher Mr. Roberto Lim Jr. and Guidance Counselor Mrs. Sheryl David. The purpose of the talk was to educate and help the junior high school’s Grades 9 and 10 students choose their strands in senior high school.
In what Mrs. David described as “a twist”, PCC’s Guidance Office and Senior High School Department teamed up to educate upcoming senior high school students on the importance of choosing a strand and managing their expectations for college and the future. The program invited three students as guest speakers, namely, Renjiro Chavez (11A-ABM), Janelle Xu (11A-HUMSS), and Luis Iñigo Ravara (12C-STEM). Two former senior high school head teachers, FilSocMATLE Coordinator Mr. Daryl Teves and Science Coordinator Mr. Rodmar Corcuera were also present as guest speakers. The career talk proceeded in a talk show fashion, with the speakers taking turns answering questions posed by the moderators.
The topics discussed ranged from the experiences of the senior high school students during their time in their respective strands, the factors to consider when choosing a strand, and the head teachers’ own experiences and advice on choosing a strand. Later on, the speakers also cleared any misconceptions about the strands, emphasizing the need to stop comparing the strands as each strand had its own strengths and weaknesses. “Walang superyor na larangan” (There is no superior strand.), said Mr. Teves.
After the presentation of certificates to the guest speakers, the program concluded with Mr. Lim mentioning how the junior high students' struggle in choosing a strand was normal and that they were not alone. “It’s a change that everybody just has to go through and it’s normal to struggle, but all you need to do is to accept it, and ultimately, when you accept it, that’s the time that you’ll be able to look forward,” he said.
