On July 28, 2023, the PCC Science Department held the nutrition month celebration with the theme “Healthy Diet, Gawing Affordable for All!” The event consisted of two parts: the Botanical Garden and the Bazaar, both located on the ground floor, and the talk about “Edible Plants Endemic in the Philippines”, held in the Audio-Visual Room.
The first part of the program was a healthy food Bazaar, which sold nutritious foods made from different plants, and the Botanical Garden, which was opened when President Dr. Polly Wee Sy and Vice President Dr. Sining Marcos Kotah cut the ribbon.
The second part of the program was a talk from Mr. Ronald Allan Vaguchay, a microbiologist, about edible plants endemic in the Philippines. He talked about the definition of endemism, the difference between endemic species from endangered, native, and exotic species, the importance of endemic species, and finally, the different edible endemic plants in the Philippines, as well as the various ways of consuming them.
According to Mr. Vaguchay, “Three out of ten families are suffering from moderate to severe food insecurities.” So, we should all promote proper nutrition and have healthy diets.
