Mid-Autumn Festival | 中秋節

September 12, 2022

This past weekend, Taiwan celebrated the Mid-Autumn festival. Each year, it is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Originally, it was a time to celebrate harvest and worship the moon. Now, it is recognized as a time to reunite with family and share a tasty meal together.

A few of the traditional foods for Mid-Autumn festival include: mooncakes (月餅), pomelo (柚子), watermelon, and crab. Mooncakes are by far the most common and well-known. They come in a variety of flavors, but traditionally have a salty duck egg yolk in the middle to symbolize the moon. When eaten, they are cut into small pieces, and each person sharing the mooncake takes one bite. Personally, I don’t care for the salty egg yolk, but enjoy red bean or lotus flavored mooncakes.
