Calculate means to determine the amount of something.
eg If apples cost $5 per kilogram, calculate the price of 3 kg of apples:
3 ✕ 5 = $15
Solve means to find a solution to the problem.
eg Solve how many kilograms of apples can you buy for $15
eg Solve the following algebra equation: x + 10 = 30
Justify means to use appropriate mathematics (or mathematical language) to give reasons to how you solved a problem or to give reasons as to why you believe your solution is suitable.
eg Showing your working with appropriate mathematical working or language to show how you got your answer.
eg Using mathematics or data to back up and show why you believe your statements are correct.
Evidence is data, facts or observations that support your working or statements made.
Analyse (an analysis) means to explain, examine and interpret information or a graph given.
You need to use Mathematical evidence to back up (justify) your analysis.
Evaluate can also mean to determine the amount of something.
eg If x = 5 and y = 10, evaluate the value of x + y:
5 + 10 = 15
Evaluate can also mean the process of deciding if you have done something the best way and looking at what could be improved.
This does require you to use Mathematical evidence to justify why you believe this.
Compare means to determine similarities and differences between two (or more) things.
eg Compare the following two shapes:
eg Compare the price of food from 2016 and 2020.
Discuss the similarities and differences between the price of food in 2016 and 2020.
You need to use Mathematical evidence to back up (justify) your statements.
A claim is a statement made by someone.
eg All whales have three hearts.
You are often asked to agree or disagree with a claim.
You need to use Mathematical evidence to back up (justify) your statements.
