The following words are common words used in Probability (& also Statistics)
An experiment is a procedure that can be repeated infinitely, with a specific set of outcomes.
eg flipping a coin
eg rolling a die
eg drawing a card and replacing the card, from a standard pack of 52 cards.
An outcome is a possible result from an experiment.
eg flipping a coin - an outcome could be getting a "Head".
eg rolling a die - an outcome could be getting a "4".
eg drawing a card and replacing the card, from a standard pack of 52 cards - an outcome could be getting a "Red Jack"
The sample space is the list of ALL possible outcomes from an experiment.
eg flipping a coin - the sample space is {Heads, Tails}.
eg rolling a die - the sample space is {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.
eg drawing a card and replacing the card, from a standard pack of 52 cards - the sample space is {Ace Hearts, 2 Hearts, 3 Hearts, 4 Hearts, 5 Hearts, 6 Hearts, 7 Hearts, 8 Hearts, 9 Hearts, 10, Hearts, Jack Hearts, Queen Hearts, King Hearts, Ace Diamonds, 2 Diamonds, etc}
An event is a specific outcome or a set of outcomes resulting from an experiment.
eg Rolling a die and getting a 6.
A trial is where you conduct the experiment once. Often in Probability (& Statistics), we need to run many trials to gather reliable data.
eg Flipping a coin 100 times.
eg Rolling a die 1,000 times.
A success is where a desired event occurs.
A failure (fail) is where the desired event does NOT occur.
eg Flipping a coin. The desired event could be "getting a head".
Success = getting a head Failure = getting a Tail
eg Rolling a die. The desired event could be "getting an even number"
Success = getting 2, 4, 6 Failure = 1, 3, 5
The relative frequency is the frequency of the outcomes, converted into a probability (between 0 and 1).
eg Flipping a coin 10 times (6 heads, 4 tails)
Relative frequency of head = 6 out of 10 or 0.6
Relative frequency of tail = 4 out of 10 or 0.4
