An operation is a process between two or more values.
The four most basic operations are: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Addition
This is the process when you add (adding) or plus or sum up the numbers.
eg 13 + 4 + 11 = 28
Subtraction
This is the process when you subtract (subtracting) or minus or takeaway the numbers from each other.
eg 20 - 14 = 6
Multiplication
This is the process of repeated addition. It is also called multiply (multiplying) or times.
eg 5 ✕ 4 = 20 (5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 or 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20)
Division
This is the process of separating a number into a specific number of parts. It is also called divide (dividing).
eg 20 ÷ 2 = 10 (20 is being separated into 2 parts, each part has a value of 10)
When numbers or expressions are written as a fraction, this also represents division.
When numbers or expressions are written as a fraction, we can say:
20 divided by 2
or 20 over 2
or 20 out of 2 (this is most common when we deal with probability, eg 1 chance out of 2)
