In Algebra:
A variable is a symbol or letter of the alphabet that is used to represent a number.
We do not use the multiplication sign
eg a ✕ b = ab
eg 3 ✕ w = 3w
Any number being multiplied by a variable is called a coefficient. These are numbers out the front of the letter (variable).
eg 3w means 3 ✕ w. The number 3 is called a coefficient.
Any number on it's on, is called a constant.
eg 3w + 2 means 3 ✕ w + 2. The number 2 is called a constant.
A term is either a single constant or variable, or a combination of them, including coefficients.
eg 5p
eg 4
eg b
eg -7e
eg ab
An expression is one or more term.
eg 5p + 8
eg 4 - 2x
eg 7p
eg ab + 2abc
An equation is an expression with an equals sign.
eg 4w + 8 = 40
eg x + 7 = 10
