This week, Marta García, PREMA Racer secured a significant victory by attaining the very first win of the inaugural F1 Academy Grand Prix, held at the Red Bull Ring. After achieving pole position during the first qualifying, García held onto her lead for the majority of the race.
At the very first turn, Martí executed a strategic overtake on Bianca Bustamante around the outer edge of the track, securing P2. However, at Turn 3 a collision occured between Emely De Heus, MP Motorsport's racer and Lola Lovinfosse of Campos Racing. As a result, Lovinfosse was subjected to a five second penalty. De Heus was unable to continue due to damage sustained and was forced to retire while Léna Bühler and Carrie Schreiner, both from ART Grand Prix soon followed after falling victim to the gravel traps in attempt to avoid the previous accident.
Following the elimination of 3 drivers, a safety car was deployed. Once the safety car had returned to the pits, Nerea Martí, racer for Campos Racing was able surpass García and claim the lead while Hamda Al Qubaisi, who had begun at the very bottom at p15 had crept up to fourth, closely pressurising Bustamante for the remaining podium position.
In the latter stages of the race, García manoeuvred her way into Turn 4, a late dive allowing her to overtake Martí, claiming first place. Unfortunately, Megan Gilkes suffered a spin-out, which resulted in her sliping from fifth place down to tenth, leaving Bustamante, H. Al Qubaisi, Pulling, and Edgar, to vie for the remaining position on the podium. During this final stretch, Hamda Al Qubaisi also spun out, which forced Pulling to take evasive action and go wide, allowing Bustamante to claim third position, with Edgar close behind in fourth place.
Nerea Martí was later disqualified and lost her podium place after it was discovered that the Campos Racing car was not in compliance with the Technical Regulations. Jessica Edgar (Rodin Carlin) took her place instead, obtaining her first Podium in the F1 Academy.
"I'm feeling really good after the win, it's great to be back on the top step especially as it's the first ever F1 Academy podium so it's really nice. It feels really cool!" - Marta García
