While systems mapping is all about seeing "what is," the journey of creating a systems map for Hawai'i's food system began first with thinking about "what could be."
Hawai'i's food system drives community wellbeing, economic vibrancy, and ecological resilience.
Local food is the healthy, accessible and affordable choice for Hawai'i communities.
Over eight worksops with 200+ food system stakeholders across the state led to the development of over sixty loops which were distilled into the seven shown in the map and videos below. You'll find links to the live map on an appl called Kumu as well as additional links showcasing the process and loop genealogy.
This video provides a short overview of the entire process. Here's a slide deck with the journey and the link to the live map on Kumu.
Deep dive into each loop with the one-minute videos and loop resources below.
What does the next version of the economy of look like for the state of Hawai'i?
Most land in Hawai'i is privately owned and won't be sold. How do you incentivize deals for food system transformation?
How do we develop closed-loop systems that make the most of every resource?
How do we shift from surface-level tourism that takes from Hawai'i to deep engagement with all parties that supports Hawai'i?
Is this the tipping point for (k)new practices that are truly life-giving, land-loving and community-building?
