Unique Properties of Water
Problem: What are the characteristics of water that make it unique to life?
Introduction: Water has several unusual properties that make it one of the most unique substances on Earth, and certainly one of the most important. All living organisms are composed of cells, which are about 70% water. The biosphere includes all parts of Earth that support life and almost 75% of Earth is covered by water. The polarity of water molecules and the resulting hydrogen bonding between water molecules is the primary factor that dominates the chemistry of water.
Pre-Lab Activity: Water has many amazing properties that you will observe in this lab. Review the terms used in the phrases below and write what each statement means in your own words.
Water is the universal solvent.
Water has high surface tension.
Water is cohesive and adhesive.
Water is a polar molecule.
When added to water, some substances are hydrophilic and some are hydrophobic.
Different phases of water have different densities.
