Dr. Syed Ahmed Raza Naqvi (StM ‘06-‘09, GM ‘13-‘21, M ‘21-24, SM '24-Present)
Syed Ahmed Raza Naqvi received his B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from National University of Science and Technology School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (NUST-SEECS), Pakistan in 2009. He was recipient of Rector’s Gold Medal award for the Best Final Year Project. He completed his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia in 2012 and Ph.D. degree from the University of Western Ontario (UWO), London, Ontario, Canada in 2021.
From 2012-2014 he worked as an Instructor at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in Electrical Engineering department where he worked on sustainable energy potential in KSA and on system identification algorithms in power and communication systems. He was the recipient of London Hydro scholarship in 2015 from UWO.
Between 2021 and 2022, he worked as a Simulation Specialist for Electrical System Testbenches as part of Application eXpertise and Electrical Simulation (AXES) team at OPAL-RT Technologies, Montreal, Canada, where he was involved in the development and testing of real-time models pertaining to microgrids, AC-DC inverters and DC-DC converters on OPAL-RT’s testbenches and power amplifiers. He is currently working as a Senior Power Electronics Modeling Engineer at TAE Power Solutions., California, USA, as part of the Power Solutions team. He is currently involved in designing and commissioning of high power and high current DC power supplies for Fusion related research at TAE Technologies Inc.
Syed Ahmed Raza Naqvi has published several journal and conference papers in reputable IEEE journals and conferences. His main areas of research include dynamic and steady state control of power systems, power management and control for PV/battery based residential microgrids, design of high power and high current DC power supplies, and application of system identification techniques in non-linear systems.
Expertise in developing simulations models for battery energy systems using MATLAB/Simulink and LabVIEW.
Preparing technical requirements documents for different types of power supply units and taking responsibility of selecting the suitable specs, planning the experimental test stands and commissioning of these power supplies for fusion reactors.
Expertise in developing and prototyping power electronic converters for battery energy storage systems and power supply units for fusion reactors and for futuristic microgrids.
Expertise in developing microgrid models in RT-LAB and HyperSim and running real-time simulations with OP4510 and OP5700 simulators.
Experience with integrating protection relay with OP5700 simulator.
Expertise in developing RT-LAB based models and testing them on OPAL-RT test-benches.
Integrating third-party equipment including LN solar and wind-system test-benches with OP1400 test-benches.
Expertise in developing PHIL models using OPAL-RT's 4Q Amplifiers (OP8110)
Expertise in developing microgrid models in HyperSim and running real-time simulations with OP4510 and OP5700 simulators.
Expertise in using Imperix based test-benches and integrating power electronics modules with OP5700.
Expertise in developing models to integrate Lucas Nuelle testbenches (PV, and wind) OPAL-RT's OP1400 and OP1420 testbenches.
Configuring the standard OP1420 Microgrid testbenches as per customer requirements.
Preparing FAT documents and model guides for commissioning.
Gave 6 days of internal training (OPAL-RT employees) on using HyperSim and integrating HyperSim models with SEL relay.
