2017 - A New Year and New Challenges

Our Wednesday Weekday Volunteers have been busy with various tasks on our local reserves such as installing some stepping stones on some muddy sections at Gailes Marsh. They also fixed up the stile near the Gailes Hotel, this should allow easier access onto the reserve from the cycle path.

They have also had a couple of days at Oldhall Ponds where they have been laying a hedge that was planted by volunteers about 7 years ago.

Our Juniper cuttings project at our Grey Hill Grassland reserve also had a visit and we took more cuttings and did tree maintenance on the tree saplings that were planted last year. We also planted 10 juniper trees we had raised from cuttings over the past few years.

Projects coming up this winter include a new bird breeding island at Oldhall Ponds,a new tree nursery at Gailes Marsh, tree planting at Shewalton Wood and a host of other jobs on our Irvine reserves.

Our local reserves have had some winter visitors recently with a Little Egret spotted at both Shewalton Wood and Garnock Floods. Six Whooper Swans have also been at Oldhall Ponds. Wildlife photos courtesy of ©Lindsay Twilley
