Describe movements that are used in the Khmer Apsara dance of Cambodia.
Try to use some of the moves used in the dance in one you create.
Have Fun!
The word Apsara is defined as "water nymph" or "celestial spirit" which is rooted in ancient Indian mythology. According to the folklore, Aspara is used to call fairies of clouds and water. When they dance then plants and animals can multiply and flourish.
From these things, the Cambodian people have created the Apsara dance which was once performed in the palace during holidays to praise the Gods and the royal family.
Over centuries the dance became more popular and now when traveling to Cambodia you can see a dance known for being smother and famous for its elegance and nobility.
The dancer begins their training before the age of ten and it lasts for up to fifteen years.
Dancers must have flecilibity in their hands to bend their writes and fingers in every direction.
The main character acts like a fairy in a rose garden.
In the aspara dance, each movement has a different meaning:
A curved finger pointing upward means "today".
An arm at chest level it means "happiness".
A left hand facing backwards and right hand in front of the chest with three fingers pointing up represents the snake Naga, the mount of Vishnu God. (See left image)
An upward hand represents "Death"
A downward hand represents "Life"
If the two hands move up and down in a fast rhythm, it refers to the 4 stages of the human life cycle: birth - adulthood - illness, and death.
Pick one of the videos above and tell some of the moves that were used. Try and look for movements that were mentioned above with their meanings.
Now, while thinking about the Elements of Dance to include Body, Energy, Space, and Time (BEST), try your best to create a dance with clear movements.
You can use your own school appropriate song to dance to.
Record yourself performing your dance.
Write the steps that you used and what each step meant. You can use meanings from the Aspara dance and you can create your own moves with your own meanings.
