The Roche System

The Roche System

The Roche system is most noted for Nickel One, the adopted homeworld of the Verpine. It is entirely devoid of planets, but consists of 14 separate asteroid fields orbiting the system's single sun. The Roche system is a system located in the mid rim, which houses the largest settlement of Verpine. It consists of the Roche asteroid field orbiting the star Roche. The Verpine rely extensively on technology to make the asteroids habitable. The Roche asteroid field, sometimes known simply as Roche, were a series of asteroids colonized by the Verpine, including Nickel One (the capital), Slayn, Korpil, Roche G42, and Shantipole. Some believed that the Roche asteroids were the remains of the Verpine homeworld, possibly destroyed by civil war. The Verpine simply claimed that they did not know where their homeworld was located. The government has been called by two different names in sources, the (Verpine) Hive and the Verpine Technocracy. This government referred to all the Verpine worlds as a cohesive whole and not the disparate Hive-minded governments of each planet or system.

Roche asteroids joined the Galactic Republic early in its history, sometime between 25,000 BBY and 22,000 BBY. In 3996 BBY, a Verpine pirate named Raxsus Nuli tried to conquer a planet, but was arrested by the Jedi. When the Wookiees joined the galactic community, they traded with the Verpine for manufacturing processes. The asteroids were the headquarters of Roche Industries and Slayn & Korpil. They were the only place where larmalstone was available. Roche also exported Verpine shatter guns prior to the Jedi Civil War. A Roche asteroid, site of the Shantipole Project. After the Battle of Yavin, the asteroids were the site of the Shantipole Project, in which Slayn & Korpil worked with Ackbar to develop the B-wing starfighter. When the Galactic Empire became aware of this, Governor Bane Nothos blockaded the system. However, the Rebels broke the blockade with the B-wing prototypes and blew up Research Station Shantipole, resulting in Nothos's demotion to Commander.

The Roche system is heavily defended by a series of Ataturk-class and Golan Space Defense stations. There is also a space station production hub consisting of various shipyards, staffed by the technologically advanced Verpines, which produces military-grade technology for The Resistance.

System Governor

The System Governor is responsible for the administration and development of infrastructure within the system. Please contact the System Governor for access past shields.

System Military Adjutant

The System Military Adjutant is responsible for the defense of the system. This includes overseeing the system defense fleet, commanding military installations, and protecting commercial and civilian traffic in the system.

The Verpine

Biology and appearance

An insectile/reptilian race known for their ability to fix high-tech devices, they were the original settlers of the Roche asteroid system. Their exact homeworld remains a mystery even to the Verpine. The Verpine have developed a high level of technology, but retain a child-like sense of wonder at the galaxy around them. The Verpine body is thin and ungainly, and has only four limbs - two long arms and two thin legs. Their large, black eyes have evolved beyond the normal ability of the multifaceted eyes of most insects, allowing the Verpine to see incredible levels of detail. They live in hives of about 100 Verpine, and reproduction is only required when the population of the hive drops below a certain level. Despite their hive mentality, each Verpine is allowed individual thoughts. Their communal consciousness precludes the need for formal government. They have a body organ in their chest that allows them to emit radio waves and thus communicate with each other across distances. There is some discussion on the necessity of the Verpine's antenna, and the fact that the most criminal Verpine have always had damaged antennae.

Their hardened carapace, composed of a green chitinous substance called carahide, was as flexible as the skin of other creatures, yet tough enough to deflect a blade or even absorb a glancing blaster bolt. The Verpine circulatory system did not contain a heart — at least, not an organ which Human physiologists would identify as a heart.

Society and culture

Verpine had variable naming customs. Some had single names such as Fxz'et, Zix, Ss's, or Moegid. Others had first and last names such as Kuli Ned'lx, Kyli Ned'Ix, or Osos Niskooen. Many, though not all, Verpine names contained sibilant consonants and glottal stops.

The Verpine people did not evolve in the asteroids of the Roche system. Each inhabited asteroid was only made livable through the creation of artificial, self-sustaining environments in the interior. Some observers thought that the Roche asteroids were the remains of a Verpine homeworld which had broken up either slowly through natural forces, or suddenly as a result of a catastrophic civil war. Others theorized that the Verpine were descended from extra-galactic nomads who settled in the Roche asteroid field. The Verpine simply told outsiders that they were unaware of the location of their original homeworld.

Whether it was due to the after-effects of this ancient civil war, or because of the political uniformity and egalitarianism of their civilization, the Verpine were a peaceful people, expert arbitrators who preferred compromise to conflict. The large insects had long been a spacefaring race and had colonized the Roche asteroid belts before the Galactic Republic was born.

By the time of the Jedi Civil War, the Verpine were part of the Galactic community. High-quality Verpine-manufactured items ranging from ion blasters to cardio-regulators were widely used. Some of these designs were adapted and improved from other species, such as the Bothans or the Arkanians. Contemporary rumors were suspicious of the Verpine, however. Extrapolating from the Verpine practice of testing ion blasters on active droids, some Verpine weapons and medical technology were thought to have been tested on live sentients.

Many of the Verpine who left their home system found work as starship technicians. Most of them met with success, though some of them would get in trouble for continually making unauthorized, sometimes dangerous, "improvements" to the equipment they maintained. Others used their experience with Verpine communal decision making to act as professional arbitrators and negotiators.

Planets of The Roche System

Nickel One

The biggest of the Roche Asteroids, Nickle One is considered the homeworld of the Verpine race. Although, the actual Verpine homeworld is unknown, the Verpine have been habitants of Nickle One for over 25,000 years. Nickle One, unlike the other asteroids, is a series of hives held together with focused repulsor beams, which makes Nickle One the biggest asteroid in the galaxy.

Slayn is one of the Verpine colonies. Along with Korpil, they co-created the A/SF-01 B-wing starfighter for the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

The Shantipole Project was a venture devised by Commander Gial Ackbar and the Verpine colonies of Slayn & Korpil to create more effective starfighters for the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War.

The Shantipole Project was based on the asteroid Shantipole, located in the Roche asteroid belt. The B-wing starfighterwas the major output of this project, and development of the B-wing Expanded soon followed. However, the Shantipole research facility was compromised by an Imperial spy, who led Captain Kolaff to the Roche asteroids; the Imperial corvette, Javelin 3 was one starship that was sent to destroy the project. Transports such as Shantipole were able to evacuate personnel from the facility, though ultimately Ackbar's forces were able to drive Kolaff away. The light freighterOut Runner participated in the project.

Additional Asteroids

The Roche System is home to ten additional minor asteroids. While the majority of these asteroids are owned and maintained by The Resistance in collaboration with the Roche Hive, there are a few which are privately owned.
