Things you MUST do when starting off as a locum:
Make sure you are on the medical performers list as a GP locum
Inform Defence Body of work status and number of sessions per week
Register with HMRC for self employed status (click here for link)
Agree your locum rates, terms of service and have it in writing before starting work
Download NHS pension forms
Develop a robust system for bookings to prevent cancellations and double bookings
Develop a system for invoicing and tracking payments
Record all income, expenses and mileage as you go
Keep all receipts for expenses in case of a HMRC investigation
Set a side at least a third of your gross earnings for tax (rough estimate)
Know where to turn to for help and support
Make sure you are on the Wales Deanery Appraisal Database
Things to consider:
Make a list of contact details for practices in your area
Familiarise yourself with different computer systems
Learn how to use a spreadsheet
Get an accountant
Get Income protection/ critical illness cover
Consolidate your personal finances e.g. mortgage, savings, loans, credit cards
Decide what equipment, documents, paperwork you will need to carry with you
Decide what drugs you will carry in your bag if any at all
Plan your holidays in advance to prevent overwork and burnout
Join a Sessional GP group and attend meetings
Join the National Association of Sessional GPs
Join a Locum Agency
