Before starting CPR it is best to ensure that help is on the way.
You have approached the situation and found the person lying on the floor. You gently shake their shoulder and ask if they can hear you.Â
When you get no response you dial 999.
Caller: [Caller dials 999]
Operator: 999, what's your emergency?
Caller: Yes, I'm at Ladybridge Park, and a man has collapsed. He's not breathing and he's unresponsive. I think he's having a cardiac arrest.
Operator: Okay, stay calm. I'm sending an ambulance to Ladybridge Park. I need you to stay on the line with me.
Operator: Do you know the exact location in the park?
Caller: We're near the big playground, right next to the main entrance.
Operator: Got it. Help is on the way. Now, do you know how to perform CPR?
Caller: Yes, I do.
Operator: Great. Let's start right away. Place the heel of your hand on the centre of his chest, then place your other hand on top of the first. Interlock your fingers. Are you in position?
Caller: Yes, I'm in position.
Operator: Start chest compressions. Push hard and fast, at least 2 inches deep, at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. I'll count with you. Ready?
Caller: Ready.
Operator: One, two, three, four, five... Keep going, you're doing great. Is there anyone around who can help you?
Caller: Yes, there's a crowd. I already asked someone to get the park's AED.
Operator: Excellent. Have they returned with the AED yet?
Caller: [Pause] Yes, they're back with it now.
Operator: Perfect. Turn on the AED and follow the voice prompts. Don't stop compressions until the AED tells you to.
Caller: [Caller turns on the AED] Okay, it's on. It says to attach the pads to his chest.
Operator: Follow the instructions on the AED. Attach the pads as shown in the pictures on the pads. Make sure no one is touching him.
Caller: [Pause] Pads are attached. The AED is analysing now.
Operator: Make sure everyone is clear of the person!
Caller: [Pause] Okay, it's clear. It says to deliver a shock. [Pause] Shock delivered. Now it says to continue CPR.
Operator: Continue with chest compressions. Help is almost there. One, two, three, four, five...
Caller: One, two, three, four, five... [Continues counting]
Operator: You're doing great. Keep it up until the ambulance arrives. They're just a few minutes away.
Caller: Okay, I'm still doing compressions. [Pause] I see the ambulance now.
Operator: Good job. Keep going until the paramedics take over.
Caller: The paramedics are here now. They're taking over.
Operator: You've done an excellent job. Let the paramedics take over from here.
Caller: Thank you.
Operator: You're welcome. Stay with them in case they need any additional information. Help has arrived, and they're in good hands now.
Caller: Okay, thank you.
Operator: Take care. Goodbye.
Caller: Goodbye.
