Introduction Video

(10.42) During this short video, students will learn about beavers and this keystone species amazing role in changing the physical environment.

Standard: L5.LS.1 Organisms perform a variety of roles in an ecosystem.

In this lesson students will be introduced to beavers; experiment with the way they change the environment; learn about keystone species and learn why they are important.

Format

Materials

  • Student worksheet google doc

  • Tray/Container (examples paint tray, plastic tote)

  • Clay or play dough

  • Twigs or popsicle sticks

  • Small rocks or marbles

  • A book or some lego blocks to prop your container up at one end.

  • Water

  • Paper towels or proper towels in case you spill water

Activity : Think Like A Beaver

Students will assess the materials and come up with a design for their own beaver dam, then build it.
