Scratch Programming

Scratch Programing

Whizara’s Scratch programming course offers a fun way for young students to start thinking like a programmer as they explore and develop imaginative stories, animations and games using MIT’s Scratch programming interface. Students learn programming concepts and Scratch specific concepts including motion, looks, sound, events, loops, conditionals, game mechanics, operators and variables. The course further reinforces computational concepts of sequencing, pattern recognition, parallelism and algorithmic thinking. No prior coding experience is required to participate in this course. Student will use SVDP iPads.

Students will eat lunch in cafe after school is dismissed (12:45-1:30pm). There is no ChoiceLunch. Students must bring their own lunch. Students will go to Scratch Programming class after eating. Students may NOT leave campus for lunch.

Javascript Programming

Introduction to Javascript Programming

Whizara’s Introduction to JavaScript programming course introduces students to the fundamentals of browser-based application development via its fun, graphics, animation and game-based engaging curriculum. Students learn the fundamentals of programming including variables, user inputs/output, random, conditionals, loops, functions, events, lists and more. Throughout the course, students develop a range of browser-based applications and a course-end project to showcase their learnings. The programming concepts learned in this course are transferable to any other programming language. No prior coding experience is required to participate in this class. Students will use their SVDP-owned iPad

Dungeons & Dragons

Bay Area RPG:

D&D is a creative game of fantasy and high adventure that strengthens the imagination and collaborative skills of its players. Players take on the role of a fantastical character of their own devising and create sprawling adventures under the guidance of a dungeon master. Our dungeon masters bring years of professional theater training and experience into their games, calling on their creative backgrounds to create immersive environments that are fertile ground for imaginative play. We provide all materials required for play and welcome players of all experience levels. At the end of each session our dungeon masters will provide a written summary of the day’s journey so you can experience the adventure as it unfolds from week to week.

Karate

Karate is a martial art that originated in Okinawa, Japan, and has since spread worldwide. It involves a combination of strikes, kicks, and defensive techniques, as well as mental discipline and focus.


The primary goal of Karate is to develop physical and mental strength, discipline, and self-defense skills. Practitioners of Karate can improve their physical fitness, balance, coordination, and flexibility, while also learning self-defense techniques and developing mental focus and discipline.


Karate can also provide a range of other benefits. For example, it can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve confidence and self-esteem, and promote a sense of community and camaraderie among practitioners.


Overall, Karate is a martial art that promotes physical and mental strength, discipline, and self-defense skills. It provides a range of physical and mental health benefits and is an excellent way to improve overall well-being.

Adventures in STEM with LEGO® Materials

Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects and use special pieces to create your own unique designs! Projects are rotated seasonally to ensure that both new and returning students can explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system.


Due the high demand, this program will be offered TWO days this Winter. Students may only register for ONE day.

In this class we'll be creating unique multimedia artworks that combine wet and dry media. Wet Media is any media that flows such as oils, ink, watercolors, and acrylic paint, and it uses a liquid as pigment medium. We'll be using watercolor and acrylic paint in this class, combined with Dry Media for marking our drawing with material such as graphite, color pencils, crayons, and pastels. 


Students are always encouraged to bring their own ideas, and art projects, they want to work on in this class

Apple Swift Playgrounds & Sphero Robots

Swift Playgrounds is a revolutionary app for iPad and Mac that helps you learn to code and build apps using Swift, the same powerful language used to create world-class apps for the App Store. Engaging lessons and walkthroughs demonstrate the core concepts of coding and building apps as you write real Swift code in an interactive environment. Ms. Jenks will cover programming concepts including commands, loops, operators, functions, conditional statements, variables and more! Students will then apply their learned programming skills to controlling Sphero Robots to navigate mazes and collect data in fun interactive experiences.. No prior coding experience is required to participate in this course. Students will use SVDP iPads.

Academic Chess

Join us as we share our knowledge and enthusiasm around the ancient game of chess.  Following the basics of piece movement, algebraic notation, material value of the pieces, our lessons will cover the principles/rules of the opening game, tactics/strategic planning of the middle game, and common endgame scenarios.  We’ll analyze the games of the ‘greats’ as well as analyze the games of our future Chessmasters.  This will be done in a supportive environment while stressing patience, sportsmanship, and respect for both the game and the members of our club.  Club members will receive our exclusive workbooks and as part of our mission, hopefully a lifelong love for the game of chess. Stop Motion Animation

This course is a fun course in which students collaborate in different artistic approaches to create a stop motion video. Students will have hands on experiences making art. Meanwhile they will learn how to collaborate with each other on a project. In order to have a successful result, everyone needs to take turns, be fast, be accurate, think quick and respect others turns and decisions.

Mobile App Development

Mobile App Development using MIT App Inventor (Gr 4+)


This course introduces students to MIT App Inventor. Students understand the purpose and the user interface of App Inventor, and use it to build several applications/games. As students build these projects, they explore core programming concepts and the different aspects of App Inventor, including adding components and design their layouts, the blocks editor, and writing scripts to add behavior to the components. No prior experience with coding is required to participate in this course. Students will use SVDP iPads.


**STUDENT MUST HAVE A GOOGLE ACCOUNT - Please be sure you create a google address with your student so they can access the MIT App Inventor - more details will be provided upon registration**
