Svalbard/MOSAiC workshop

on snow, sea ice and aerosol interactions in the Arctic

An online workshop to bring Arctic researchers together

A huge number of questions still exist around the role of aerosols, snow and sea ice in Arctic warming

To try and understand some of these links, an unprecedented number of measurements were carried out in the Arctic during the 2019-2020 period. These included the large-scale MOSAiC campaign, as well as both intensive measurement campaigns and the continuation of long-term measurements in Svalbard.

This workshop will bring together researchers from MOSAiC and from campaigns in Svalbard to increase our understanding of snow, sea ice and aerosol interactions and processes, and share insights from these projects.

We will discuss existing datasets, summarise the current understanding of snow/sea-ice-aerosol interactions, outline research currently taking place and identify the most important questions that still remain open.

This workshop will focus on four key topics:

1. Deposition of impurities onto snow

2. Snow & aerosol/CCN formation

3. Marine biogenic aerosols

4. Aerosols & the radiation budget

This event is co-funded by IASC cross-cutting funding, with contributions from the IASC Atmosphere and Cryosphere Working Groups.
