History

Sushi Violation made its debut in Late 2014, it was a simfile pack played on StepMania/In The Groove setups in homes and arcades. The stepcharts weren't as fantastic as you'd think, they were pretty hated in the In The Groove community. The first simfile pack was released on November 30th, 2014. Featuring 8 songs and a "credits" song, the credits song was an insanely hard (near to impossible) stepchart on an unknown song. Sushi Violation 2 came out shortly on January 20th, 2015. This pack also featured 8 songs but had no credits song. The series was put on a halt after a long break from dance games, lasting almost two years.

After a long break from dance games, Sushi Violation made a sudden comeback on December 10, 2016. Sushi Violation EX was released on August 7th, 2017. This pack was different compared to the previous packs because it had widescreen backgrounds and giant CD images, there were 9 songs and the returning "credits" song. Sushi Violation 3 was released on November 13th, 2017. Featuring 15 songs and 9 shortcuts, a whopping total of 24 songs! This was the final pack of the Sushi Violation simfile series, no more packs were made after the release.

Sushi Violation originally had a theme on OpenITG back in 2014 (left picture), but it was never released because of functionality problems. Although the original theme will never see a release, many things from the original theme were carried onto Sushi Violation 2018.

Before Sushi Violation 2018 became what it is today, it went through many different phases and had a completely different prototype before the game received its final UI. The first prototype called Rhythm Violatorz was created in April 2017 (middle picture), the theme ran on a heavily modified Simply Love theme for SM5. It was a huge mess but a lot of things worked....yet didn't. It's very hard to explain how many problems this prototype had, but it was scrapped and Sushi Violation: The Engine (right picture) was worked on using the default theme for SM5. This version of the game had many different phases, which have codenames based on their appearances.

The very first design of the game, the game didn't truly feel like a real race car game. Although the sound effects used and the fast-paced animated red checkerboard background gave a small vibe of "fast and dangerous", which totally suited the stepchart style of the game. This interface was obviously very unfinished and many stuff did not work yet, this phase only lasted 2 months.

Slowly changing, Race Car came to an end and the Poker interface came into play. The fast and dangerous animated background was changed to a slowly scrolling background with slightly altered red checkerboard flooring. The working logo Sushi Violation: The Engine was replaced by a new logo featuring the original Sushi Violation name with its respective Scooter font, along with a copyright line for realism. A brand new default noteskin "Clover" was created. New graphics were made and a music wheel was finally created, however this music wheel was very small and only showed three songs at a time. As unfinished it may have been, this almost could've been the final game with a little more work, but overtime it felt disgusting to play on. The results screen was horrifying! After 2 months of playing Poker, it was time to move on to another UI.

The most known phase of Sushi Violation, this UI is completely different compared to the other phases and actually works beautifully. This interface took a whole 7 months of serious work and debugging. There has been pretty good feedback on this particular UI, this is where people started taking interest in the game. Sushi Violation was in its prime, there have been revamps on a ton of screens, this game felt like an actual game instead of some StepMania theme. The Sushi Violation logo was given a final revamp featuring the Team Sushi on the copyright line.

A demo version was launched for a limited time, which lasted for a whole summer.

A very highly skilled developer was removed from the team for the game series, this removal resulted in a ton of assets being removed from the game. The game wouldn't see another release until the second demo on September 18th, 2020; this demo featured more songs and two original videos made specifically for the game.

The FINAL Update! was announced on July 14th, 2022 featuring a finalized song list, potential story, even Spanish/Hebrew/Japanese logo variants were created for the game as well. While the planned story event never came to fruition, the song list surprised some folks when three original tracks were composed for this update; alongside commissioned art of SV original characters. This update would introduce Shivo Kyoufu; the human version of Sushi formed after the events of Extraterrestrial Revelation (cancelled story event).

SV Originals included:

Extraterrestrial Assault by Silvio: used as the major boss song featuring Laura Abaddon as an opponent.
SFEM by Silvio: serves as the menu music (simfile data exists but no steps are included).
Xross Dimension (The Fall of the Sushiverse) by ozene: featured as the game's ending music and movie.

The series would finally conclude, albeit with a cliffhanger...

HAS IT REALLY BEEN TEN YEARS?

Sushi Violation 10th Anniversary Edition began development on February 14th, 2024. This new expansion continues to use the 2018 Final base theme, but with extreme enhancements to the theme code and overall visual presentation. Obviously more songs were added, but over 100 new charts were added altogether! Simfiles received some cosmetic changes, proper balancing was made (sorta)...
