Indian civilization and culture is an essay written by Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as father of nation or Bapu. He was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. In this essay Mahatma Gandhi has highlighted the Important features of Indian civilization and culture. He says that foundation of Indian civilization is far better than the Western Civilization and our Civilization cannot be beaten in the the world because we are following the path that our ancestors made for us.Western people sometimes say that we are uncivilized, ignorant, and stolid. But Gandhiji disagrees. He thinks this idea is wrong. He believes that we can do everything that Western people do. However, our culture and way of life don’t always allow us to do the same things they do.Gandhiji tells us that our ancestors liked living in villages more than cities. They knew that cities had a lot of bad things like crimes, robbers, and thieves. But in villages, people could live peacefully. Gandhiji says that mind is a restless bird the more it get the more it wants and remains unsatisfied so we should not indulge in our passions. Gandhiji is never prejudiced while talking different civilizations. He sometimes stresses the amalgamation of what is best in western civilization with that of Indian civilization. According to Gandhiji civilization is a path which points the people of country to their duty. Gandhiji expresses some of the features of Indian civilization for example Simple living and high thinking live and let live. He advocates moral elevation self containment as real happiness of man. Gandhiji rejects the accumulation of wealth. He forbids the blind imitation of western civilization. He says that it is the duty of every Indian to follow the high ideals of Indian civilization.
