jefferson was born in arcadia bay and at some point in his life, developed an interest in art and photography as a student. he attended the american academy of art in chicago. eventually, jefferson's work would become widely recognized during the 90's and this would lead to him becoming a well-established photographer. his shots have been published on front covers of various fashion magazines and he also has his own book published on taking the perfect photograph.
mark has a very strict opinion on art and photography and is prepared to criticize other artists' views and opinions on specific art styles, for example, his early comments on the famous photographer diane arbus. he believes strongly in the beauty and innocence that art should maintain, such that he believes true beauty is almost impossible to obtain "without a beat".
in the late 2000s, jefferson took a well-publicized detour into teaching around the country, inevitably ending up in a permanent position at blackwell academy. when he was offered a teaching position at blackwell academy back in arcadia bay, jefferson accepted the position as art lecturer. this would lead to a huge increase in popularity of blackwell as numerous students applied from around the country just to get a place on mr. jefferson's art course. much of his work is displayed around the blackwell campus, particularly at the front of the building in large-scale, outdoor frames. however, jefferson used his position as an art teacher to find suitable models for the secret illegal photography he pursued in the dark room, a bunker in the possession of the prescott family.
it's unknown when exactly jefferson became involved with the prescott's. upon becoming a teacher at blackwell academy, he acted as a mentor to nathan. the prescott's allowed him complete access to the bunker and dark room. unbeknownst to them, jefferson was manipulating nathan.
outwardly, jefferson appears to be a charismatic and charming man, an active and passionate photographer and teacher. he seems to care about the work of his students, making sure all of his students enter the "everyday heroes" contest with a gentle reminder at the end of his photography class session in order to have a chance at progressing their artistic careers. however, his dismissive treatment of kate's problems as she asks for help reveals part of the truth of mark jefferson behind the mask; a far more more callous and insensitive person.
jefferson is dismissive around flirtatious advantages from his students, which stems from his value of innocence in people.
in reality, jefferson is a cold, methodical, sadistic, and nihilistic individual, with an obscure obsession to capture the frame of "innocence" in others. he is obsessed with the idea of "capturing that moment innocence evolves into corruption", and is prepared to kill anyone who he deems a liability to him or his plans, stopping at nothing to achieve his personal objectives.
he is willing to manipulate others to his advantage while making sure that they remain silent. jefferson seems to have situations planned out well in advance, this combined with his high intelligence and extreme cunning has allowed him to continue what he is doing without being caught.
when it comes to his modus operandi, jefferson will find victims that fits his idea of "innocent", drug them and take them to his dark room, where, while his victim is in a heavily drugged state (and thus in a state between "innocence" and "corruption", he will take photos of them, before giving them another dose of drugs, then dropping them off somewhere. he has no sexual motivation for his actions, nor does he have any interest in killing his victims, but he will kill anyone who puts his secret at risk of coming to light.
