when bob was just a child, he was kidnapped by a religious couple (holly jones, and her husband, simply known as mr. jones) who had become obsessed with getting revenge on god for killing their son (who died of cancer). as such, they took to kidnap other parents' children, so that they would lose faith and thus be "turned into demons". bob, like several children before him, was drugged with an lsd and ketamine cocktail and thrown into a pit in the couple's back yard, a wooden plate blocking the hole, and a car parked over it, to prevent him from escaping. he was given a handmade book of mazes by the jones, and told that if he solved all of them, they would let him go. however, for each day that passed without all the mazes being solved, a snake would be tossed into the pit with him, and he would be put through several forms of abuse by the jones', including keeping him drugged the entire time he was there. in reality, the last maze in the book was also unsolvable, as the jones' plan all along were to kill the children they kidnapped.
somehow, bob eventually managed to escape, however, unlike the other children who were taken and killed, though the trauma he went through, both physical and mental had taken a great toll on his mental health. due to having been drugged, he also could not remember a lot of what had happened, so his kidnappers remained at large. despite his parents getting him a therapist and trying their best to help him recover, bob struggled so severely that he was eventually put on disability benefits when it became clear he was unfit for work when he came of age.
at some point, bob came across a book written by a former fbi agent who had been working on the case, trying to find the kidnappers, the book being called "finding the invisible man", which was about a theoretical suspect the agent believed was responsible for the abductions. reading it made bob's already fragile mental state even worse, developing an obsession with his kidnappers and with trying to understand them, in hopes that maybe it would trigger a memory, something that he could bring to the police to help them catch them and prevent any more children from getting hurt. as a result, he started simulating what little he remembered of his kidnappers, including drawing mazes to be solved, burying "bodies" (he'd steal mannequins and buy clothes and use pig's blood on them, as he didn't want to actually hurt anyone,) in his backyard, etc, essentially reliving his trauma from their perspective, trying his best to remember anything of importance, while essentially re-traumatizing himself over and over.
tw: suicide mention ahead !!
in canon, bob eventually ends up shooting himself after the police arrests him, falsely believing he has something to do with the kidnapping, or possibly even is the kidnapper, as being arrested triggers memories of his kidnapping and as they don't allow him to finish the mazes he draws, he only sees one other option out of there: to kill himself.
i obviously cannot write bob if he's dead, though, so i'm gonna alter his canon a bit from this point on, saying that he did not manage to get a hold of one of the police men's guns when they pulled loki off of him, and instead, he remained in custody, until they realized he had nothing to do with the kidnappings aside from actually being a victim himself. while bob did want to help the police, the way they arrested him and the way loki assaulted him in the interrogation room brought so much of his trauma back that it made him essentially shut down to protect himself instead.
