The project connects two partially access-controlled economic corridors: Solapur to Surat and Surat to Chennai. Chennai Surat Expressway constitutes two different types of greenfield and brownfield projects.

The stretch between Surat and Ahmednagar passing through Nashik and the stretch from Akkalkot to Kurnool, which connects Maharashtra to Karnataka to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, will be the greenfield part of the expressway.

The first section of the Surat Chennai Expressway will be the Surat-Solapur Economic Corridor, spanning 564 kilometers. This corridor will connect Gujarat and Maharashtra, passing through Nashik, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Kalaburagi, and Raichur. It will significantly improve connectivity and boost economic development in these regions.

The second section of the expressway will be the Solapur-Chennai Economic Corridor, stretching 707 kilometers. This corridor will connect Solapur in Maharashtra to Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. It will facilitate efficient transportation between the two states, boost economic growth and trade.

The greenfield projects include the Surat-Solapur Economic Corridor and the Kalaburagi-Raichur section of the Solapur-Chennai Economic Corridor. These sections will be constructed from scratch to ensure optimal design and connectivity. The Surat-Solapur Economic Corridor spans 290.7 kilometers, while the Kalaburagi-Raichur section covers 280.1 kilometers.

The brownfield projects involve the upgrade and expansion of existing highways. This includes certain sections of the expressway in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. The total length of these brownfield sections is yet to be finalized but is expected to significantly contribute to the overall length of the expressway.

The Surat-Chennai Expressway is currently under construction, with various sections at different stages of development. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 2, 2021. The first section, from Kalaburagi to Andola Village, spans 70.1 kilometers and is being constructed by PNC Infratech. The second section, from Yadgir to Baswantapur Village, covers 65.5 kilometers and is being built by Dilip Buildcon. The remaining 40.5 kilometers of the second section will be constructed in the near future.

Further sections of the expressway are planned in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Once completed, the expressway will provide seamless connectivity between Chennai Port and various regions in these states. It will also facilitate better connectivity with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Vijayawada-Bengaluru Expressway, and the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway.

The Surat to Chennai Expressway represents a significant leap forward in India's infrastructure development, poised to reshape travel between Gujarat's bustling city of Surat and Tamil Nadu's capital, Chennai. Stretching over 1271 kilometers and passing through six states, this access controlled expressway promises to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and fuel economic growth along its corridor.Int

Spanning from Surat, Gujarat, to Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the expressway will traverse through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, connecting major cities, towns, and economic hubs along the way. This strategic route promises to bolster regional integration and facilitate smoother transportation networks across state boundaries.

Once completed, the Surat to Chennai Expressway will drastically reduce both travel time and distance. Currently, a journey between these two cities can take around 35 hours covering approximately 1570 kilometers. However, with the new expressway, travel time is expected to be cut down to around 18 hours, covering a reduced distance of 1271 kilometers. This significant improvement in efficiency will not only benefit commuters but also enhance freight movement, contributing to economic productivity.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will spearhead the operation and maintenance of this expressway. Their involvement ensures adherence to high-quality standards and efficient management practices, enhancing the overall reliability and safety of the road network.

The Surat to Chennai Expressway is a monumental undertaking, with an estimated cost of Rs.45,000 crore. This significant investment underscores the government's commitment to modernizing transportation infrastructure and fostering economic development across regions. Despite initial estimates pegging the project cost at Rs.50,000 crore, optimized planning and execution have led to cost savings without compromising on quality or scope.

Upon completion, the Surat to Chennai Expressway will rank as the second longest expressway in India, following the Delhi to Mumbai Expressway. Its expansive length and strategic connectivity highlight its importance in bolstering national connectivity and facilitating seamless movement of goods and people.

The Surat to Chennai Expressway epitomizes India's vision for progress and connectivity. As construction progresses and the project nears completion, it holds the promise of transforming travel experiences, stimulating economic growth, and fostering greater integration among states. In a bid to improve road connectivity in Southern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Surat-Chennai Expressway in Karnataka on January 19, 2023. The foundation stone was laid for the two Greenfield sections of this six-lane expressway.

Update: To augment the inter-state connectivity and boost the road outreach in Southern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for Surat-Chennai Expressway in Karnataka on January 19, 2023. Work on two Greenfield sections, the Surat-Nashik-Ahmednagar section in Gujarat and Maharashtra-Akkalkot-Mahabubnagar section in Maharashtra-Karnataka-Telangana, will be carried out on priority on the expressway.

The expressway is a 1,270 km-long highway between Chennai and Surat. The PM laid the foundation stone for Surat-Nashik-Ahmednagar section in Gujarat and Maharashtra-Akkalkot-Mahabubnagar section in Maharashtra-Karnataka-Telangana. The stretch would pass through Nashik, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Kalaburgi, Kurnool, Kadappa and Tirupathi. These two sections have a total length of 66 km and 71 km, respectively. The cost of each project will be Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 2,100 crore, respectively. And while the roads between Surat and Ahmednagar in Gujarat and Akkalkot and Mahabubnagar in Maharashtra will have Greenfield alignments, the other corridors will be widened from the existing two-lane to four-lane roads.

K R Kiran, Project Director, NHAI, Hyderabad, averred that the six-lane Pune-Bangalore Highway has saturated and cannot handle additional traffic; therefore, a new route has been planned via Akkalkot, Mahabubnagar and Tirupati. (more details on Informations only.com)

A combination of two partially controlled economic corridors is planned along the Surat-Chennai Expressway. The map shows the construction of Greenfield stretches and the upgradation of Brownfield sections.

The six-lane expressway from Surat to Chennai under the Bharatmala project crosses 21 villages of Shahpur and Wadagera taluks in Yadgir district, and lands were acquired for a 65 km stretch, with dry land costing Rs 9 lakh per acre and irrigation land costing Rs 19 lakh per acre. The farmers complained that they had lost their fertile land for the project, and the administration is not helping them get adequate compensation for land acquisition.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already given the contract for Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the Greenfield stretch between Surat and Ahmednagar. The development is under various stages of execution in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Telangana. In terms of real estate the Surat-Chennai Expressway will result in the growth of corporates on economic corridors.

The development will indefinitely boost the connectivity between Chennai and Mumbai as it would reduce the distance between the two cities by 100 km. Currently, vehicles from Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu have to take an alternative route via Karnataka to reach Mumbai. However, the highway would bring some respite to travellers. The industrial development along the stretch will give rise to a floating population along the expressway, which in turn will provide a boost to real estate demand.
