Sparrow grew up an orphan on the streets of Bowerstone Old Town with her older sister Rose, surviving on whatever scraps they could afford through whatever odd jobs they could find. What happened to their parents, she didn’t know, Rose never talked about them so she never asked. They were happy though, or as happy as two little girls living in squalor could be. Every morning and every night, they would look up at the beautiful Castle Fairfax in the distance, wishing to live there and no longer have to struggle to survive.
One day, they were attracted to a loud commotion in the plaza; a trader had come to town, claiming to be selling Old Kingdom artifacts for almost nothing. One said artifact was an old music box he claimed had the incredible power to grant one wish. While Rose was skeptical at first, they were ultimately convinced by a strange blind woman. So, spurned on by the chance of a better future, the girls get to work trying to gather the coin to buy it. Once they do, they buy the music box and take it back to the back alley they call home.
Once wound up, the music box opened and began to glow a beautiful gold while an eerie tune played, but its golden light quickly turned blood red before it disappeared in a flash of light. Disappointed by what seemed like a joke, the girls settled in for the night, upset about the waste of a week’s worth of food money.
They were woken up in the middle of the night to guards at their proverbial doorstep, asking in hushed tones for them to follow them back to the castle. While Sparrow shared Rose’s excitement that it was the music box’s magic finally giving them the life they deserve, it didn’t stop the sinking feeling in the younger’s gut from getting worse and worse the farther they went. Once they reached the castle, they were greeted by Lord Lucien’s butler, Jeeves, who led them to Lucien himself in his study.
When they arrive, Lucien is kind and soft-spoken, asking them to stand within a circle cut into the stone floor. When they did, it began to glow a bright blue, confirming to the man something the children weren’t privy to. When he tried to enter the circle, its glow turned red, and he turned away in a rage, confusing them. What did the man really want?
Then he drew a pistol, and everything spiraled out of control. Lucien shot Rose despite her pleas, turning to Sparrow and doing the same. The force of the shot sent the younger crashing through the stained glass window behind the glowing diadem, and to her supposed death. But death would not come for the child. Instead, the blind seer Theresa took the child in, knowing her true fate, training and raising her at the Traveler Camp by Bower Lake.
For ten winters, Sparrow trained. Haunted by the events of that night, ready to seek out revenge for her sister’s death. With Theresa’s guidance, Sparrow was able to awaken the Hero blood flowing in her veins and begin the long journey to end Lucien’s reign of terror on the land.
