Join Dr. Denise Maxwell in session one of our series, as she shares her story inspired by the Multiplier Effect. What is the Multiplier Effect? Serving as a multiplier, learning from a multiplier, or working for a multiplier provides the individual opportunities to grow their intelligence and accept challenges. The multiplier effect is in action when there are questions presented, space provided, challenges proposed, and a belief in another person’s ability to grow to accept the challenge. Multipliers do not only uncover the intelligence in others, but they also increase the level of intelligence. Multipliers provide more understanding and space for a person to develop, but there is also more expected from the individual in their learning, work, and contributions.

This month’s story is inspired by “The Talent Magnet”, who looks for genius in all people (Wiseman, 2017). Join Dr. Tony Farrell as he explores a story inspired by how leaders are able to study and identify a person’s talents and be sure they are placed in the right places at the right times for ultimate growth potential for a group or classroom learning opportunity.

This month, Dr. Adrianne Hanson shares with us a story inspired by the Liberator, a leader known for leveraging stress in a way that encourages people’s best thinking and work (Wiseman, 2017). Liberators create space for others by restraining themselves until others are heard, in our online classrooms and beyond!

Join Dr. Tamecca Fitzpatrick as she shares a story inspired by leaders who are the “Challengers” (Wiseman, 2017). A challenger finds opportunities to challenge people beyond what they think they can do, presenting an opportunity and asking the hard questions and allowing others to create the answers. Come hear and reflect how that applies in your online learning environment.

Dr. Frank Guevara brings us a story of becoming a “Debate-Maker”, a leader that frames the problem by creating a question, forming a team, gathering data, and then framing the decision (Wiseman, 2017). The story this month will consider how we as educational leaders can spark a debate that includes rigor of thought, but also creates a safe space for best-thinking.

In our sixth session of the series, Dr. Kelly Olson-Stewart brings us a story inspired by the “Investor” (Wiseman, 2017). A leader that invests time and energy so that others can take ownership of results will name the lead, give over ownership of the goal, invest needed resources while coaching and provide backup for the group while also holding accountability.

While considering how leaders impact others through the “multiplier effect”, we must also consider another type of leadership trait: The “Accidental Diminisher” (Wiseman, 2017). This month, Dr. Kathleen Pierce-Friedman will share with us a story inspired by the effects of those accidental diminishers, reflecting on the diminishing impact on those they lead despite having good intentions. Our eighth session in the 2021 ED Talks series brings us Dr. Jackie Kyger, and his story examining how to deal with a “Diminisher” through the lens of the multiplier effect (Wiseman, 2017). Join us to listen and reflect on how you might deal with diminishers as an educational leader.

In this fourth annual ED Talk at TLC, we feature the student perspective, as UAGC doctoral students and alumni share their stories relating to the impact of the "Multiplier Effect". The 2021 ED Talks series is inspired by the work of Liz Wiseman and her New York Times best-selling book, Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter. Through the personal stories shared in this year’s sessions, this ED Talks series will develop strong student leaders within the context of the online higher education environment. Join us for a time of sharing and reflection.

Join us in the finale to the our ED Talks Multipliers series, as Dr. Latisha Shipley shares with us a story of recognizing our diminishing tendencies and resolving to becoming a Multiplier (Wiseman, 2017). Together, we will reflect in this final session and put a spotlight on Multiplier moments and discuss rituals and norms that integrate Multiplier tendencies with practices in our online classrooms.
