We've come across a very neat trick! The classic Nintendo game Super Mario 64 is actually playable on your Xbox right now, and it doesn't require any kind of emulation tools or special apps.

Back in April, our sister site Nintendo Life highlighted how Super Mario 64 was now playable via a browser (it's called Super Mario 64: Browser Edition), but we assumed Xbox's outdated Microsoft Edge app would struggle to run it.

However, after a couple of tests, we've managed to get it playing in the old version of Xbox's internet browser (soon to be updated to the Chromium version), and it runs pretty well. Here's how to get it working:

We've played around a bit and got the first star, and despite some minor performance issues, Super Mario 64 really does run pretty well on Xbox! We're assuming the upcoming Chromium version of Edge will run it even better.

We do have to give thanks to RandomAccessRaul on Reddit for the initial idea, who posted a short video showing Super Mario 64 in action on Xbox yesterday, which you can watch above. This is a very cool little discovery!

Haha that's pretty cool, I've got a few variations of this on PC including ray tracing. I do find it funny that Nintendo have basically ported by far the worst version of this game in the last year or so

@Spaceman-Spiff because it's been completely decompiled and reprogrammed from the ground up and also includes enhancements. No code is original so it exists in a legal grey area where they can't do anything.

@norwichred Interesting! I would have thought just making a game using Mario's likeness would have been enough to get the lawyers excited, then again I really can't pretend to understand how the law works in these situations.

I definitely did read something about why the decomp version was allowed to exist although I can't find it now and everything I google about this browser version suggests surprise that it hasn't been taken down yet......

I can't pretend to be an expert in these matters - and I was surprised. But I definitely read somewhere that there was a legit reason why the decomp version was allowed to exist (this is spun off from that version, and is not the same)

or Microsoft might try to make a deal with Nintendo so that a Nintendo edition of the xbox series X|S but we all know the likely hood of that partnership being put in place. just imagine being able to play Wii, Wii U, GameCube games, as well as Nintendo Switch games on an xbox system.

(All of this is perfectly legal and on the Microsoft Store, by the way. No ROMs or BIOS files are provided, and the community on the Discord server is super helpful and responsive if you run into any issues.)

It will be interesting to see how it runs on the new Edge. It's still a better port than the official one on Switch. I wonder how to use the N64 start button because the menu button changes controls and the view button toggles full screen on and off.

@BlueOcean You can join their Discord and watch the #gamr13s-announcements channel. They don't notify individual users, but you'll be in the next wave, presumably this evening. Otherwise just wait and try it tomorrow  152ee80cbc
