If I, instead, choose the Flash Gameshark option, it immediately saves a backup of the current Gameshark ROM as GS{CURRENT_ROM_NUMBER}.z64 in a Gameshark directory. At this point, I waited a few seconds for any sync needed, and then just shut off the power, careful to not press the buttons. It ended up not corrupting the Gameshark or SD card, and no new image was written to it.

When comparing that GS*.z64 to the Read Cartridge GPERROR.z64, they do differ after even truncating my 4.2MB GPERROR.z64 to 262144 bytes. I think that means the backup code in Flash Gameshark does something to workaround issues. I keep getting a good matching image when using the Flash Gameshark menu option.

Thanks for the in depth explanation!

I wondered where it was getting that random MUSHROOM string but looks like you figured it out. So if I read that correctly you were able to get a .z64 image of your GameShark? I was curious to see if I could dump the GameShark ROM and try loading it in Project 64 just for fun.

Obviously it would be super pointless since cheat options are built into the emulator, and I'm not sure if the GameShark menu would even load since on a real N64 a game needs to be attached to the GameShark for it to boot.

You're quite welcome, and I think your idea of making the function run directly is a great plan, just in case. It wasn't too worrisome for me, as the buttons aren't that touchy, but your serial console could be. And, yes, you understood me correctly: I do have my original .z64 Gameshark image backed up now due to these experiments. Actually, I have an older image too that matches, so I must have been curious before but forgot all about it until now. I never tested the ROM on an emulator or the Everdrive64, as I think you're right: They're probably incapable of patching a predetermined game like the real Gameshark does when one's atop it.

Aw man, that's a bummer! Trying to back up these saves seems like a risky operation indeed. Last night I checked the voltage of the CR1616 batteries in the GB carts I tested (Metroid II and Kirby's Dream Land 2), and they're easily within 90% of 3V, so they should be fine. I did also check the batteries for my games that use real-time clocks and those are super dead, so that's a to-do item for me. 2351a5e196
