Frequently Asked Questions
What is SlowRead?
SlowRead is a reading tracker and focus app. You can:
- Track the books you want to read, are reading, and have finished
- Organize them into visual libraries and shelves, and with tags
- Run timed reading sessions that can block distracting apps
- Keep everything private on your device
How do I add a book?
Open the Books tab and tap the + button. You can search by title or
author, scan a book's barcode with your camera, or enter a book by hand.
Tap a result to see its details, then add it to your library.
What's the difference between Libraries and Tags?
Libraries are your visual shelves on the Library tab — collections you
arrange and show off. Tags (on the Books tab) are quick labels for
organizing, like "Romantasy" or "To reread." A book can belong to several
of each.
How do reading sessions and app blocking work?
Start a timed session from a book you're currently reading. With SlowRead
Pro, the timer can block the distracting apps you choose using Apple's
Screen Time controls, so your focus stays on the page. You grant that
permission yourself and can change the blocked apps anytime in iOS
Settings.
Is my reading data private?
Yes. SlowRead is local-first — your library, shelves, reading history,
notes, and any photos you take of book covers live on your device, not on
our servers. Book search sends only your search text to public book
databases to find covers and details.
Can I import my books from Goodreads?
Yes. Export your Goodreads library as a CSV file, then import it from
Settings. You can review which shelves become Libraries or Tags before
importing, and missing covers are fetched automatically afterward.
Is SlowRead free?
SlowRead's core features are free. A premium subscription, SlowRead Pro,
unlocks the distraction-blocking focus feature.
What does SlowRead Pro include?
SlowRead Pro unlocks distraction blocking — locking the apps you choose
during your reading sessions so nothing pulls you away — and supports the
app's continued development.
Why is there a subscription?
A subscription funds ongoing development, new features, and keeping the
app reliable and polished over time.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by the App Store. Open the iOS Settings app, tap
your name, then Subscriptions, and select SlowRead to change or cancel.
Your access continues until the end of the current billing period. Refunds
are handled by Apple through their standard refund process.
How is my data stored and protected?
Your reading data is stored locally on your device and protected by your
device's own security. If you create an account, your name and email are
stored securely to manage it. We never sell your data or use it for
advertising.
Can I use photos of my books?
Yes. You can photograph a book's cover or spine to personalize how it
looks on your shelf. These photos are stored only on your device.
