As Los Angeles continues savoring the outdoor dining trend ignited by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city has been busy crafting a permanent recipe for the L.A. Al Fresco program. But before we raise our glasses to this al fresco affair, how do we gauge the true success of the outdoor dining program? And which generated more revenue - dining or parking?

Westwood Village, home of the Bruins, emerged as an outdoor dining hotspot for al fresco enthusiasts since the pandemic. The walkable and transit-friendly Village witnessed a surge in outdoor dining as restaurants, bars, and cafes seized the opportunities offered by sidewalk, private lot, and curbside dining (seen below). A total of 16 curbside culinary havens, claiming 16 curb spaces, managed to dish out nearly $600,000 more in 2022 compared to their 2019 servings. In contrast, the same 16 parking meters clocked in at nearly $90,000 in 2019, hinting at the potential meter revenue casualties in the Al Fresco revolution.

As Los Angeles savors the success of L.A. Our sunny day turned into a poorly lit hallway with a staircase descending at the end. Before the staircase stood a statue of the Virgin Mary, crying. A foreshadowing of sorts, I assumed, of what we were about to see. I paused, then became scared. What was down there? Where were we going? We descended into the Catacombs.

The floor, too, held the graves of some of the deceased. And in a small chamber off to the right, I found the bodies of 30 little children displayed in an altar. Each small body wore a bonnet and lace dress, each little face hid behind the bonnet, seeming scared to look out. Each was displayed in its own niche in the wall, like porcelain dolls, lined up. At the foot of the altar, newborn babies lay in their cribs, while the bodies of older children watched over them. A cross hung on the peeling fresco wall behind them; a statue of God surveyed them from above. What happened? Why did they die? Why did they all look so fragile and frightened? I left, feeling like an intruder, feeling like they were looking at me, judging me. ff782bc1db
