The beauty of tradition with a gentle splash of blue
As an interior designer at IKEA, I remodel rooms in showroom to maintain a fresh, updated look and showcase trendy design inspirations. Using an insight from the sales department and my own research of the neighborhood, I created mood boards, personas, and interior design solutions that were locally relevant.
In this project, I had the opportunity to remodel a kitchen with the goal of creating an inspiring space featuring a layout that is predominant in our market.

I started with showroom floor study so that I would have rooms that vary one from another in terms of style expression and living situations. After gathering enough information, I created personas and the mood board that reflects our local customers. This kitchen belongs to an Italian family with two teenage boys in Hicksville, New York, and it is the main hub of their home—where they cook favorite family recipes, celebrate birthdays, and create joyful memories.
After creating a mood board, I had dived into planning phase, where I get to ideate and create actual solutions for the new room. This phase is divided into three steps, which are rough planning, fine planning, and detailed planning.
During the rough planning phase, the goal is to brainstorm as many ideas as possible to explore various options and opportunities. It was important to design a solution that was not only inspiring but also commercially relevant. I identified several necessary solutions for the kitchen by using a function-bubble strategy. At the same time, I needed to design a layout that naturally directs customers toward the products we want to promote.
After we decided on the main product and our preferred option, I moved into the fine planning phase. During this phase, I developed more detailed solutions for each function bubble created earlier. I also researched finishes and materials for the room in greater depth and prepared the carpentry and electrical requests to ensure the room was ready for implementation. After creating all the necessary documents, I proceeded to produce realistic 3D perspectives to share with the departments partnering with us on this project.
