Story of a tour operator in the midst of the tide and tigers of Sundarban

Tour de Sundarbans was incepted back in 2006 and it was by chance that Rajesh landed up in Sundarban.Actually Rajesh came looking for a fishing community which trains Otters for fishing. Seeing this very ingenious method of livelihood in a documentary film, was so attractive that he went looking for them in Sundarbans About Us and in his pursuit he found Sundarban itself . Ofcos this community was not to be found because much later Rajesh found out that this particular community were in Bangladesh side of Sunderbans and not India but what Rajesh found was equally fascinating. The first impressions of Sundarban were enough for him to mentally start thinking about staying and working here.

Very few people are lucky enough to work in something which they love and Rajesh considers himself Lucky to be one of those few.

So the first year was mainly coming back again and again, indulging with the local community in their day to day life which made Rajesh think twice about his city life and this dream of creating a space where city dwellers would come to this amazing place and live few days like the locals do,doing what they did in their day to day life, eventually Backpackers Tour de Sundarbans was officially formed in 2006.

Starting with the first single guest that came on the tour till today in 2022 when thousands have participated in this unique style of organising the Sundarbans tour,Rajesh and the team has not lost its passion towards Sundarban.

With time a lot was added into the experience and the main focus shifted from mere tourism to Eco-tours which opened a whole new avenue.

In 2012 Eco Village was conceptualized and the preaching turned into practice.

Organic mud cottages,farm animals,local practices and a vast open space gave wings to the like minded guests and an army of local community became the guardian of eco village.

Down the line Responsible-tourism got added to Eco Tours of the outfit and the team started looking for more and more ideas to implement it on the tour and eco village in general.

This was 2012 and Eco tours was fairly new to the guests but thankfully most of the guests embraced and motivated the endeavour and those who didn't understand atleast appreciated it. Since few years a lot of companies have named themselves Eco-tourism etc for gaining business but will never understand the triumph and struggle of this process.

Backpackers Eco Village Tour de Sundarbans is pledged into respecting Sundarbans and mother nature so it will always practice the organic way of tours in Sundarban.

Rajesh still is learning from the locals and the guests alike.

This journey would not have been possible without the spirited team of human beings from Kolkata and Sundarban that believed walked and participated in this long off beaten path of tears and laughters. Some have chosen to walk on their own journey and some are there for life long . A big salutations for all the past,present and future team members of Backpackers tour de Sundarbans.

To understand why Tour de Sundarbans is so keen on practicing responsible Tourism one has to see the eroding embankments,rising sea water level and increase in the salt content of the salt-water rivers of Sundarbans. To spend few days in this special place definitely asks for one to be responsible towards mother Nature.
