Perseus’s mother had been banished by her father, Acrisius, when a prophecy had predicted that Acrisius would be killed by his grandson. Years later when Perseus was at an athletic contest, he threw a discus that accidentally killed Acrisius. The prophecy had come true.
Before Perseus reached Medusa, he first had to pass the Graeae, three of Medusa’s sisters who acted as lookouts. But as they only had one eye among them, and handed it to each other in turn, Perseus was quickly able to snatch it from them and throw it into a lake. Then he easily passed the Graeae.
The most striking meteor shower of the year, the Perseids, appears in Perseus in August. The meteor shower peaks every year around August 13, when the rate of meteors can reach over 60 per hour, which usually happens in the hours just before dawn.
When King Polydectes wanted to be rid of Perseus, he set the young man on an impossible mission: to bring back the head of Medusa, whose gaze turned every living creature to stone. Polydectes may have hoped that Perseus would never return from his journey, but the King hadn’t considered that Perseus was the son of Zeus and was supported by the gods. Before beginning his mission, Perseus was given a bronze shield by the goddess Athena, a sword made out of diamond by Hephaestus, winged sandals that allowed him to fly by Hermes, and a helmet from Hades that made him invisible. When Perseus saw the first human figure that had been turned to stone, he knew that he had reached Medusa’s lair and that he must put on his helmet of invisibility. From there he moved forward through the trail of men and animals who had been turned to stone, only looking at the reflection in his shield to find his way to Medusa. Reaching the sleeping Gorgon, Perseus cut off her head. Without looking it in the eye, he picked up the head by its hair of snakes and put it in a bag. Returning to Polydectes, Perseus pulled out Medusa's head and the king was turned to stone.
