In the constellation, Hercules is usually shown kneeling down. This is perhaps because Hercules was a Greek version of the earlier Sumerian hero Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh was often shown in a similar position with his foot resting on the beast he had just slain.
Although Hercules’s father was the god Zeus, his mother was not Zeus’s wife, the goddess Hera, but a mortal. Hera punished Zeus’s love affair by driving Hercules insane for a short time. During this period Hercules killed his first wife and three sons. To overcome his guilt at the killings, he was Twelve Labors to complete.
Realizing that Hercules was dying from the poisoned shirt that she had given him, Deianeira killed herself.
Hercules and Deinaeira, his second wife, were traveling together when they came to a river. Hercules swam across, but the water was too fast-flowing for Deinaeira. The centaur Nessus, however, often ferried people across and began to carry Deianeira. But Nessus was so overcome by Deianeira’s beauty that he fell in love with her and tried to carry her away. To stop Nessus, Hercules shot an arrow dipped in the Hydra’s gall, killing the centaur. As Nessus died, he took vengeance on Hercules. He gave Deianeira a vial of his own poisonous blood, but told her that it was a love charm. Then later when Deianeira suspected that Hercules might be falling in love with someone else, she presented him with a special shirt covered in Nessus’s blood. She was told that the blood was a potion that would keep her marriage strong. In fact, the blood in the shirt began to burn through Hercule’s flesh. In agony, he rampaged across the land. But realizing that there would be no release from the pain, he built his own funeral pyre, spread out his lion’s mane, and lay down to die.
