Bogdan is the only child of Mioara Cantemir (née Filimon) and Barbu Cantemir, born in the small town of Strawberry on a cold autumn morning. His birth came as a surprise after years of unsuccessful attempts at having a child and fervent prayers from his mother. Even before he was born, Mioara loved her son more than anything else in the world, more than life itself even. Barbu, however, could never become adjusted to a third member of their family, despite his initial enthusiasm. The love and devotion Mioara had for Bodgan created a rift between her and Barbu, the latter believing his wife should pay more attention to him now that she got what she wanted. Over the years, their relationship degraded and turned from sour and distant to outright violent and abusive toward Mioara and Bogdan.
The culmination of this came when Bogdan was only seven years old. One day, his mother was found dead in a river-- a suicide, they called it. Bogdan had to learn what the word meant in the most brutal way possible. From then on, without Mioara to protect him from his father's lashing out, Bogdan had to learn how to survive with a cruel father who blamed him for Mioara's death.
When he was fourteen, Bogdan realized he had a crush for the first time, on another boy from Strawberry named James Jenkins. Together, they navigated a friendship growing into something more and the early rushes of what they would later recognize as love. Though neither fully understood why, they decided to keep their relationship a secret, and promised each other they would elope together in a few short years.
For nearly a year, Bogdan's life was close to happiness as possible. His father's vile treatment almost didn't matter when he knew he had James to turn to. This, unfortunately, would not last.
He was fifteen when Barbu found him and James together. It was brief and frightening-- the man fired a shot, aiming where they held hands together. James would leave with a wound and Bogan with a missing finger on his right hand. After that night, Bogdan wasn't allowed to leave the house anymore.
A few months later, Bogdan reached a point where he couldn't bear the way he was treated anymore. He remembered that his mother had left him a name and address to contact his grandmother if he ever wished to. Bogdan didn't remember her, only having met once when he was a toddler, and for all he knew, she could have been even worse than his father. Still, it was a chance, no matter how slim. One night, after Barbu had drunk himself to sleep, Bogdan wrote a letter, begging his grandmother to come and help him. He had to give away his mother's wedding band, one of the few possession he had managed to keep hidden from his father, to convince a woman from town to post his letter.
Not even a week later, Ecaterina, his grandmother, arrived. The confrontation between her and Barbu ended in bloodshed-- the woman shot her son-in-law dead and rushed her grandson to grab whatever he could and run. They fled Strawberry together, pursued by lawmen and all those who realized what had happened, escaping into the forests of Big Valley.
The two became inseparable. Bogdan told his grandmother everything that had happened-- Mioara's death, Barbu's abuse, James. Ecaterina swore to protect him and never allow anyone to lay a hand on him again. For years, they traveled together, always on the run, and Ecaterina taught Bogdan all she felt he needed to know-- from how to care for his stead to how to kill with his bare hands.
Eventually, they parted ways when Bogdan was old enough to travel on his own. Since then, he tried to put his past behind him and live an honest life-- which, he had learned, Ecaterina was not. His grandmother had been an outlaw for longer than he'd been alive. Bogdan, however, sought to work and settle down. He did a bit of everything: all kinds of work on every ranch that would take him in, working in stables and even a mine once, fishing and hunting, cleaning floors in saloons, and so on. Yet nothing called to him like shepherding did.
Nowadays, the cycle of transhumance dictates every aspect of Bogdan's life. It's a satisfying life, but a lonely one and he often goes months without any sort of social contact. It's easier in spring and summer when he's high on the mountain with his sheep and dog, where everything is peaceful and quiet, and time seems to move slower. The autumns and winters are more difficult to bear for Bogdan. When he's down in the foothills, everything feels stifling again, the way it used to when he was a child. It's these dark months with cold weather and long nights when Bogdan turns to drugs with sedative effects to quell the loudness of his thoughts and to alcohol to be able to sleep, all while waiting eagerly for the return of spring.
Bogdan lives in Murky Waters, a small village in Temeria, where he tends to the villagers’ sheep and cattle, and also serves as their healer. He has no formal magical training, having learned the craft from his grandmother, who is also a mage. Same as his main verse, Bogdan is a calm and friendly man, eager to lend a helping hand.
