Communicate Ahead of the Game

How to Communicate:

• Communication is a two-way street. Someone sends a message to another and then they respond back about what they understood. 

  • Always debrief with a person. To debrief you summarize what the message was to make sure you understood it how they wanted you to. 

• There are more ways to communicate than speech. You can gesture, use other aspects of your voice like tone, dress, and your facial expressions. 

• Remember others look at the world differently than you do. 

• People also can have different meanings for the same word. For example, a mouse could mean the animal or the computer component. 

• By self-monitoring you communication skills, you will grow better at communicating. 

• Being adaptable will better your communication skills. 

• Finding empathy when talking to someone will increase communication skills. 

• Being able to recognize explicit and implicit rules will help. 

• And keeping in mind that you are always sending messages, whether you are conscious of it or not.
