This project involved creating a door decoration to put on residence hall doors that could be personalized to the resident who lived in the room.
The reasons behind creating the door decoration are safety and a visual representation that the room is occupied. When our college campus security needs to know quickly if there is a resident living in a room, they look at the door decoration. It also tells them how many are living in that room.
Custodial staff also know that a room is occupied if they need to key into a room for cleaning purposes.
The inspiration for the door decoration is the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. This matches with the Hogwarts Letter door decoration and the Marader's Map bulletin board. Additionally, it matched the Harry Potter Object Drawing whiteboard art.
The first step of the project was to find reference photos. This is how the normal Hogwarts 9 3/4 ticket is stylized:

For this project I created the complete image from scratch based on the reference photo. It made it easier to personalize. Then I downloaded the Harry Potter font for the ticket to add an increase in the whimsy. This is the ticket without the residents' names written on it:
