Welcome! Thank you for visiting my summer practice page. I created this page for my families and community as a resource to help keep students on track during the summer. It has student AND parent resources. The focus is primary-aged, but anyone can use the information, especially the reading incentive programs at the bottom! I hope you find something helpful.

Some apps and links require a log in. You or your child's teacher would need to set those up.
Any YouTube links may have ads, please be sure to monitor your child anytime they are using a device that has internet access.
Heggerty Phonemic Awareness is offering 6 Weeks of free video lessons. The lessons are less than 10 minutes. I encourage you to have your child practice with them in order to keep their brain thinking like a reader and writer. The lessons are done by literacy experts:

How to be a Smart Shopper for Decodables:
Avoid sets that have repetitive text, are not phonics based, encourage guessing, or are outside of K skills:
First Little Readers, Leveled Readers ABCD, Buddy Readers, Sight Word Stories, Step Into Reading
OR if the range of skills is too wide, many books will be too difficult to read:

Please also check with your local library. They may have decodable books you can check out or they may be able to order some if they know the community is asking for them!

If you (or someone in your family) want to read with your child, please feel free to pick out books that interest your child to read together. Stories are a great way to build background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
Not all books need to be read independently by your child to be enjoyed!

Check with your local library and see if they are offering any free programs or incentive programs for the summer. If so, sign up or stop in to enjoy the many different activities available to you!
Mensa for Kids' Excellence in Reading
To encourage the joy of reading, the Foundation has developed the Mensa for Kids Excellence in Reading Program. Earn a commemorative certificate in recognition of your outstanding achievement and get an Excellence in Reading T-shirt, too!
