COVID-19 - Update - Camps Limited to 10 Campers - AM Only

Each camper will use their own laptop each day. No one touches any other campers laptop!

Everyone stays 6 feet or 1.83 meters from each other and wears a mask at all times.

Welcome to the Schaefer Polk Computational Thinking Camps. We are part of the Durham Academy Summer Program. This site supports the summer camps that Karl Schaefer and Donovan Polk will conduct.

What is Computational Thinking? The image from Barefoot Computing does a great job of highlighting what we consider to be Computational Thinking.

Our camps feature many of the concepts and approaches shown in the graphic. We spend a lot of time working with verbs: Develop, Adjust, Participate, Adapt, and Adhere.

Our camps allow campers to learn at their pace. Campers have access to the tools after camps for further learning opportunities.

Storytelling with CS First and Scratch Programming

Middle School Ages 11 - 15

CS First is a free program that increases student access and exposure to computer science (CS) education. In this camp you will create and share your own digital stories! Use the computer to design your own stories, create and share your own animations, and learn how technology is used in the film and media industry!

Imagine, Program and Share are the key elements of what the free Scratch software can allow campers to create. The software is free, the application is logical and campers will be supported in their learning of the programming language by a seasoned crew of instructors. Young people need to be exposed to programming at an early level to learn how the technology behind computers and games actually work and this is a great camp for that exposure. Come to this camp and “scratch” the programming itch!
