Abstract:
Composer / performer Douglas McCausland, through the lens of his project ENTANGLEMENT, will lead a conversation that explores a personal thread of musical creativity and artistry that emerged from over a decade of research into numerous fields of music technology.  Including links to disciplines such as interface design, spatial audio (higher-order ambisonics), intermedia, real-time systems, digital synthesis design, and DIY electronics, this talk will focus on the creation of large-scale multi-discipline artistic works - from the initial concepts through to a completed project.  Finally, the talk is planned to close with a discussion of strategies for the personal development of such projects, as well as a question-and-answer session.  Excerpts of the titular project will be shown throughout the duration of the talk, to provide context to various points of discussion.  Please be advised, the video documentation of the work contains flashing imagery - warnings will always precede excerpts.

Biography:: 

Douglas McCausland is a composer / performer, sound designer, and digital artist whose visceral and often chaotic works explore the extremes of sound, technology, and the digital medium. Described as “Tremendously powerful, dark, and sometimes terrifying…” (SEAMUS) and “Ruthlessly visceral…” (The Wire), he leverages the intersections of numerous technologies and creative practices, such as gestural performance interfaces, spatial audio, interactive systems, intermedia art, and machine-learning. Douglas is the TAC studio manager at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, serves as a faculty lecturer at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), and manages a record label: ex_log.records
