Suman Dutta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP). He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, where his doctoral research centered on the development of robust monolithic finite element solvers for multi-physics simulation — spanning fluid–structure interaction, compressible and incompressible flows, electrostatics, and thermal coupling. His work is grounded in continuum mechanics and is characterized by formulations that are simultaneously mathematically rigorous and computationally efficient.
Prior to joining IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Dutta served as an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, and before that as a Project Scientist at IISc, where he contributed to the development of an indigenous simulation framework for pantograph–overhead equipment (OHE) interaction — a project funded by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) in support of India's high-speed rail initiative. His research thus spans both foundational numerical methods and problems of direct national technological relevance.
Dr. Dutta obtained his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His current research interests include finite element method development, MEMS device simulation, railway pantograph–catenary dynamics, and thermoelastic stress analysis for high-temperature and nuclear engineering applications.
He is open to collaborations with researchers in academia and industry, and welcomes enquiries from motivated students interested in computational mechanics and multi-physics simulation.
