Under-sink water filter

Some areas have poor water quality so the first SUIET upgrade was water purification. SUIET now has Lowe’s best 3M under-sink filter fitted between the sink and stove. It takes no usable space from drawers or counter. The 3US-MAX-F01H filter removes sediment, chlorine and lead. The water now tastes great and it's safer to drink.

SUIET Hacks, LLC engineering goals for installing a water filter:

• Provide good tasting, clean drinking water.
• Only filter kitchen cold water. We didn't filter the hot water since we recommend never drinking hot tap water due to the risk for leached chemicals and metals. We didn't filter the city water input since the Aktiv’s storage tank and other pipes stay bacteria-free from city chlorine.
• The filter needs to be bypassable and removable for winterization. Otherwise, the filter will crack when the water freezes or will be clogged with antifreeze.

Plumbing parts:

1. 3M 3US-MAX-F01H filter kit
2. We used a female to female 3/8” to 3/8” compression fitting between the ½” IP to 3/8” compression and 90-degree 3/8” to 3/8” fitting (circled in picture). Cone washing in the ½” IP to 3/8” adapter. Nylon compression rings on the plastic pipe (discard the brass rings).
3. We now recommend Charles Holt's plumbing improvement: SharkBite 1/4 in. (3/8 in. O.D.) Chrome Plated Brass Push-to-Connect x 1/2 in. Faucet Connector Model # U3525LFA (shown in figure 3).

Installation

Two pictures show the installation at two angles with and without the filter installed. Figure 1 has callout comments. We angled the filter upward so it laid on the cabinet's front support board and out of the way of the contents of the drawer. The fit is tight but not too difficult.

Operation

Set the three valves as pictured in figure 2 and remove the filter before winterizing. Empty the filter and store with the opening covered. After de-winterization, open the two filter valves and close the bypass valve.
