Sam and Kathy love their Aktiv but SUIET Hacks, LLC is handy and is fixing most defects.
As much as we love our Aktiv we recommend that you don't buy it until Hymer has published manufacturing and dealer instructions to fix the potential fatal safety defects and recalled the already fielded dangerous Aktivs. Our dealer is aware of the defects but cannot fix them without Hymer's permission. Our only safe choice was to change the design. The necessary changes require a high level of technical expertise and SUIET Hacks fears owner repairs may introduce new problems. The whole story is laid out at:
SUIET is the 3rd VIN number Aktiv Sam and Kathy tried to purchase. The first VIN was dealer-withdrawn from contract when the dealer discovered it wasn't built as advertised. Hymer sent our second VIN to their factory expert for repair and we never saw it again. SUIET is VIN #3 and also had many factory and design defects but the dealer agreed to send us parts under warranty and we would perform repairs, so we bought it.
We love our Aktiv. Sam confesses a bias to German engineering since he credits Siemens and Airbus for showing him how to design great products. We saw the Aktiv's defects when we were shopping but felt sure that Hymer would be open to product improvement so we bought. SUIET Hacks' plan was, and still is, to promote the Aktiv with the spirit of the 1966 VW Microbus.
We will continue to Hack our SUIET but for now we must in good conscience recommend against purchase.
We still hope to turn Hymer around. SUIET Hacks, LLC and other customers would much rather have a productive non-dramatic defect discussion with the factory/engineering and know Hymer is standing behind and improving the Aktiv.
