Success.
Success is something we all want. It is a good feeling of accomplishment and meeting a goal. Some say success is making a lot of money, but others feel successful even when they have much less. Some say success is having a great education, but others with much less can feel successful as well. Some feel successful raising a family. Many things can make us feel successful.
A premise here is that every individual has the right to decide for themselves what success is. This can be challenging, especially if the culturaL influences on you are different from your own ideas. Nevertheless, it’s the individual who decides.
So, how do you become successful? Well, here’s a list of things to think about.
1. First you need goals. What do you want? Do you need more money? More education? A spouse or partner? This may be obvious, or you may have to figure it out.
2. What personalities become successful? A number of factors can be important. Imagine your goals and successes. Dream a good dream. Then focus on the process to get there. You will need a plan.
3. Additional factors include: resilience to bounce back after defeats, a native intelligence that matches your goals (don’t be unrealistic), a passion for your goals is important (it’s cure for shortcomings and small failures). What other factors do you need?
4. Sometimes luck is a factor. Many successful people say they were lucky. But some say that luck favors the prepared individuals who recognize the opportunity and know how to move and capitalize on it.
5. If you need certain opportunities to get where you want to go, do you have to move to find them? Do you need more education? Do you have a support system such as a family or spouse? Do you have a plan?
6. Do health factors hold you back? Do you have an illness such as depression that interferes? Resolve these.
What if responsibilities and commitments limit or prevent your plan or your success? Well, you can’t give up serious responsibilities. You can’t go off and live alone in the wilderness or give up income if you have a family with needs. You may have to take care of these before you can make changes or take care of them as you go along. What are the commitments that you can’t ignore that might interfere with your goals? Worse yet, what if you feel like a hopeless failure? Consider getting an experienced counselor or coach to help. There are various helping groups, books to read, and smart chances to take.
Feelings of success can come in small increments at a time. Make a gratitude list – things you are grateful for. You may already have many successes.
You can see that this can be very complex with many variables. Think about it. Come up with a modifiable plan. Get to work and good luck. As a professor for about 55 years, I have seen many become what they want to be. I did it myself a few times.
