Effective September 20, 2026
SubSpeak (package com.subspeak.subtitlereader) reads on-screen subtitles aloud and can translate them into a language you choose. This policy explains how the app handles data.
No account is required, there are no ads, and there is no in-app analytics of our own.
The app does not store or send your screen images or subtitle text to the developer. The developer operates no server that receives your data.
The app does not sell or share personal data with third parties.
When you tap “Start reading subtitles” and grant screen sharing, the app captures only the area inside the blue frame you position, a few times per second, to recognize text (OCR). Text recognition runs entirely on your device using Google ML Kit. Captured images exist only temporarily in memory and are discarded; they are never saved to storage or transmitted. You can stop at any time by closing the frame or the app.
Translation and language identification run on-device (Google ML Kit Translate and Language ID). When you first select a translation language (or tap “Download”), the app downloads a language pack (about 30 MB) from Google’s servers. This only downloads model data and does not send your text. After that, translation works offline.
Voices are provided by your Android device’s Text-to-Speech engine (for example Google Text-to-Speech or your manufacturer’s engine). Some “Network” voices may send the text to be spoken to that engine provider’s servers to synthesize audio. This is handled by your speech engine under its provider’s policy, not by SubSpeak. You can choose an offline voice in Settings to avoid this.
The app stores only your settings (languages, voice, speech rate, frame auto-hide time, etc.) in its private on-device storage. This data never leaves the device and is deleted when you uninstall the app.
The app uses Google ML Kit (text recognition, translation, language identification). It may send Google some anonymous technical information (such as performance and library version) and downloads model packs. See developers.google.com/ml-kit/android-data-disclosure and Google’s Privacy Policy.
Display over other apps (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW): to show the draggable frame over your video app.
Screen capture (MediaProjection) and foreground service: to read subtitle text inside the frame. Android asks for your permission every time you start.
Notifications: to show a notification while the app is running.
Internet / network state: to download translation language packs and to use network voices if you select one.
The app is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
