PRIVACY POLICY FOR THE SUBSELECT CHROME EXTENSION
Effective 18 September 2026
SUMMARY
SubSelect has no account, no sign-in and no server of its own. Your settings and your saved words stay in your browser. The only thing that ever leaves your device is a word or
phrase you have asked to look up, sent to a dictionary or translation service you have switched on — and only at the moment you ask for it.
WHAT SUBSELECT STORES, AND WHERE
Everything below is stored by Chrome on your own computer. None of it is uploaded, and there is nowhere for it to be uploaded to Settings. Your subtitle and translation language, which lookup provider to use, your highlight colour, and which interactions are switched on. Kept in chrome.storage.local.
Saved vocabulary. The words you choose to save, each with the subtitle line it appeared in, the site you were on and the date. Kept in chrome.storage.local. Exporting to CSV or JSON writes the file on your computer; nothing is sent anywhere to produce it.
The word you currently have selected. Kept in chrome.storage.session purely so the toolbar popup can show it, and discarded when the tab closes
API keys, if you enter one. Kept in your browser's local storage and sent only to the endpoint you entered it for. They are never transmitted anywhere else and are not included in an export.
Uninstalling SubSelect removes all of it.
WHAT LEAVES YOUR DEVICE
Nothing, until you turn on online lookups and grant access. Until then, selecting a word, copying it and saving it all work and no network request is made.
Once online lookups are on, a lookup sends two things to the provider you approved:
* the word or phrase you selected
* the subtitle line it appeared in, so the provider can use the context
This happens when you ask for a lookup — by pressing Translate, or by selecting a word if you have switched on automatic lookup — and at no other time. SubSelect makes no requests in the background, on a schedule, or while you are not using it.
Nothing else is ever sent. Not the page you are on, not what you are watching, not your saved words, not your settings, not any identifier for you or your browser. SubSelect attaches no account, cookie, device ID or user ID to a lookup.
THE SERVICES THAT ANSWER A LOOKUP
SubSelect does not run a server. Lookups are answered by independent free services, and what you send reaches them directly. Each has its own privacy policy, and your use of them is governed by it rather than by this one:
MyMemory (api.mymemory.translated.net) — translation
Lingva Translate (lingva.ml) — translation
Wiktionary (wiktionary.org, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation) — definitions, grammar
Free Dictionary API (api.dictionaryapi.dev) — definitions
Wikimedia Commons — pronunciation recordings
You can change which of these are used, or turn any of them off, in SubSelect's settings.
You may also point SubSelect at your own LibreTranslate instance, at DeepL using your own key, or at any endpoint you choose — in which case your selected text goes there instead, under that provider's terms.
If you select Chrome's built-in on-device translation, translation happens inside your browser and nothing leaves your device at all.
SITE ACCESS
SubSelect requests no access to any website when you install it.
It runs automatically only on the video sites named in its listing. On any other site it stays completely dormant until you press "Enable on this site" in the toolbar popup, which
asks for access to that one site.
Access to the lookup services is likewise requested only when you switch online lookups on. You can withdraw either grant at any time, from SubSelect's settings page or from Chrome's own extension settings, and SubSelect stops using it immediately.
WHAT SUBSELECT READS
Only subtitle text that the video player has already drawn on the screen, or that your browser has already parsed from a caption track.
It does not read the video stream, does not interfere with DRM or encrypted playback, does not download video or subtitle files, and does not read anything else on the page.
WHAT SUBSELECT DOES NOT DO
* No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or usage statistics of any kind.
* No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
* No tracking of you across sites or sessions.
* No sale or transfer of your data to anyone. There is no data held to sell.
* No use of your data for anything beyond answering the lookup you asked for.
* No use of your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
CHILDREN
SubSelect is not directed at children and collects nothing that would identify anyone, whatever their age.
CHANGES
If this policy changes, the effective date at the top changes with it and the updated policy is published at this same address before the change takes effect.
