If you want a factory-precise, single-unit engine air filter designed specifically for the tight tolerances of your Subaru Impreza or Crosstrek, choose Subaru Engine Air Filter; if you need a comprehensive two-piece cleaning solution that handles both engine intake and cabin air quality for modern Hyundai vehicles, choose X4XZ 28113AA100.
The decision between these two parts isn't just about which one fits better; it is about understanding exactly what job each part is built to do in the real world. One is a dedicated, high-purity component for a specific Japanese brand's powertrain, while the other is a multi-functional kit aimed at a broader range of Korean models with dual filtration needs. If you are planning a long hunting trip where reliable engine performance and clean air inside the vehicle matter more than saving money on a second filter, the choice becomes clearer. However, if your primary goal is maximizing airflow and interior air quality across multiple systems with a single purchase, the alternative offers a different value proposition.
• Subaru Engine Air Filter: Its biggest strength is its status as a genuine OEM part engineered for exact fitment in 2017-2023 Impreza and 2018-2023 Crosstrek models; the trade-off is that it is a single-component unit focusing solely on the engine intake.
• X4XZ 28113AA100: Its biggest strength is delivering a dual-filter system that includes both an engine air filter and a cabin air filter with activated carbon for odor control; the trade-off is that it is strictly limited to specific non-hybrid Hyundai Elantra and Kona models.
• Who it's for: Choose the Subaru unit if you drive a Subaru and want guaranteed manufacturer compatibility without any guesswork. Choose the X4XZ kit if you own a compatible Hyundai and want to tackle both engine breathing and interior air freshness in one go.
This product is defined by its singular purpose and its lineage. As a genuine Subaru Engine Air Filter Element, it is manufactured by the brand itself, carrying the part number 16546AA210. When you look at the "unit count" listed as 1, it confirms that this package contains only the engine air filter element. There is no cabin filter included, no extra accessories, and no dual-layer technology mentioned beyond what is standard for a genuine OEM engine component.
For the driver who values precision engineering over variety, this is the logical path. The appeal here lies in the fact that it is the original specification part. In scenarios where the vehicle's computer relies on very specific airflow metrics to manage fuel trim and ignition timing, sticking with the manufacturer's own part eliminates variables. If you are heading out on a hunting trip in a Subaru, you might encounter dusty trails, pollen, or heavy particulate matter. A genuine Subaru filter is designed to handle the specific airflow requirements of that boxer engine without creating restriction or allowing unfiltered debris to bypass the media.
You should skip this option if you are driving anything other than the specified Impreza or Crosstrek years, or if you are looking for a cabin air filter to clean the air inside the car. This is a single-purpose tool. If your budget allows for buying two separate filters later, or if you simply prefer to buy everything from the dealership or authorized source, this is your match. It is the safe, straightforward choice for owners who prioritize maintaining the vehicle exactly as the engineers intended, ensuring that the engine breathes exactly how it was designed to breathe.

The X4XZ 28113AA100 presents a completely different approach to maintenance. This is not just a single piece of paper in a frame; it is a dual-packaging solution containing both an engine air filter and a cabin air filter. The compatibility list is extensive but rigid: it targets the 2021-2025 Hyundai Elantra (specifically the 1.6L and 2.0L gas versions) and the 2024-2025 Kona (again, gas models only). Crucially, the data explicitly states it does not fit hybrid models or the Elantra N performance variant. This specificity suggests it is built for a particular set of engines found in those recent Hyundai generations.
What sets this apart is the feature set described in the product details. The engine filter portion uses "advanced premium filter paper" claiming 99.9% filtration efficiency for dust and particles. More notably, the cabin air filter included in the box features a "robust activated carbon layer." This adds a function that the Subaru part does not have: the ability to trap microscopic particles like PM2.5 and eliminate unpleasant smells. If you spend a lot of time in traffic or drive in areas with strong odors, having a carbon layer to scrub the air inside the cabin before it reaches your nose is a significant functional advantage.
This product is ideal for the owner who wants to simplify their maintenance schedule. Instead of ordering two separate boxes and installing them on different days, this kit provides both solutions. The recommendation to replace every 12 months or 12,000 miles applies to both components simultaneously. If you are preparing a Hyundai for a road trip or a weekend excursion, knowing that both the engine intake and the passenger compartment air are being addressed in one purchase can be appealing. However, you must be absolutely certain your vehicle is a non-hybrid gas model; using this in a hybrid would likely result in a fitment failure or poor performance, as the data explicitly warns against it.
• Best for Exact Fitment Guarantee → Subaru Engine Air Filter: Since it is a genuine OEM part, there is zero risk of mismatching dimensions or airflow characteristics for your specific Subaru model year.
• Best for Dual System Maintenance → X4XZ 28113AA100: You get two filters in one package, handling both the engine intake and the cabin air quality, saving you the effort of a second order.
• Best for Smell and Particle Control → X4XZ 28113AA100: The inclusion of an activated carbon layer in the cabin filter addresses odors and PM2.5, a feature absent from the standard engine-only Subaru part.
• Best for Non-Hybrid Gas Models → X4XZ 28113AA100: Designed specifically for the 1.6L and 2.0L gas variants of the Elantra and Kona, excluding hybrids and performance trims.
• Best for Subaru Owners → Subaru Engine Air Filter: Compatible exclusively with the 2017-2023 Impreza and 2018-2023 Crosstrek, ensuring perfect alignment with factory specifications.
• Best for Simplicity of Purchase → X4XZ 28113AA100: If you need both filters replaced, this single SKU covers both bases, whereas the Subaru requires a separate purchase for cabin filtration.
• Best for Long-Term Brand Trust → Subaru Engine Air Filter: Purchasing the manufacturer's own part often aligns with warranty expectations and long-term reliability standards set by the automaker.
• Best for High Filtration Claims → X4XZ 28113AA100: The marketing highlights a 99.9% efficiency rating for impurities, which is a specific data point provided for this aftermarket option.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would buy the Subaru Engine Air Filter if I were taking my Subaru on a serious hunting trip. Why? Because when you are relying on your vehicle in remote conditions, the peace of mind that comes from using the exact part the engine was built for is paramount. The simplicity of a genuine OEM unit means I don't have to worry about whether a third-party material will hold up under the stress of off-road dust or if the airflow dynamics are slightly off. The X4XZ kit is impressive for its dual-functionality and carbon filtration, but for a dedicated Subaru owner, the risk of deviating from the manufacturer's single-point-of-failure component isn't worth it. Stick with the genuine part for the heart of the machine, and buy a separate cabin filter if needed.
However, if I owned one of those newer Hyundai Elantras or Konas, I would immediately jump on the X4XZ 28113AA100. The logic shifts entirely because the vehicle is different. Having the activated carbon cabin filter included in the same box is a massive practical win. It solves two problems with one installation. The claim of 99.9% filtration efficiency for the engine side gives me confidence, and the added benefit of fresh air inside the car makes it the superior value for that specific application. But again, this only works if the car is a non-hybrid gas model; if you have a hybrid, you must skip this and find the correct OE part.
In short, the right choice depends entirely on your make and model. Do not try to force a Subaru part into a Hyundai or vice versa. Match the part to the machine, and you will avoid headaches down the road.
It is designed only for the 1.6L and 2.0L gas versions of the Elantra and Kona.
No, the product information lists a unit count of 1, meaning it is a single-engine air filter element. You would need to purchase a separate cabin filter for interior air quality.
The X4XZ kit includes an activated carbon layer in the cabin filter to capture odors and PM2.5, whereas the Subaru part is a standard engine air filter focused solely on intake protection.
Yes, the compatibility list confirms it works for 2021-2025 Hyundai Elantra with 1.6L gas engines, provided it is not a hybrid.
