American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP + WMSIG)
This club is a local chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) and an official Wilderness Medical Society Student Interest Group (WMSIG). During the inaugural year, our forty members participated in community volunteer events, skills labs (chest tubes, sutures, ultrasound, etc.), WMSIG hikes, an AWLS course, and a Stop the Bleed event. Starting in Fall 2018, there will be an added focus on participation in national conferences and preparation for residency training in emergency medicine (EM). Members of the club complete a free registration with the ACOEP, have the opportunity to participate in the WMSIG, and are encouraged to take advantage of memberships in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA). This club is perfect for students interested in EM and students who want to make themselves more competitive for matching EM. Leadership opportunities will be available to motivated first-year students.
American College of Osteopathic Pediatrics (ACOP)
The purpose of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatrics (ACOP) is to foster and stimulate interest among osteopathic medical students in the practice of Pediatrics. National membership includes discounted rates to the National Convention and access to online education and support materials. The local RVU chapter utilizes guest speakers, community service, public outreach and cooperation with local clubs and organizations to further the understanding and appreciation of Pediatric Medicine.
American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA)
The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) club encourages the participation and appreciation of women in medicine, utilizing the unique female perspective to positively influence holistic healthcare. This club promotes exemplifying and developing leadership, mentoring, education, and advocacy. AMWA spotlights women in the medical field to emphasize the importance of having female peers and role models and promotes women’s health by educating and inspiring the community.
Anesthesia Club
The Anesthesia Club allows students to learn and witness proper anesthesia techniques and other guidance regarding proper anesthesiology principles and practices. This club exposes student to the various opportunities in anesthesiology via physician guest speaker presentations and anesthesia skill workshops such as intubation.
Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA)
CMDA is a national organization founded to provide resources and support Christian healthcare professionals and students. The purpose of our local Southern Utah chapter is to motivate and equip students to serve with professional excellence as witnesses of Christ’s love and compassion to all peoples. CMDA has a large network of physicians, dentists, and others to provide opportunities, information, and support for students.
DOCARE
The Rocky Vista Southern Utah University Chapter of DOCARE International is established in recognition and support of global health outreach programs and the effort to provide primary healthcare to underserved people worldwide. DOCARE offers exciting and unique opportunities to student physicians to participate in various medical missions, particularly in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico. The purpose for our students is to explore areas of medicine that they ordinarily would not have access to in their university training (such as observe conditions not commonly seen in primary care medicine in the United States). DOCARE promotes the practice of medical Spanish and other languages in a clinical setting, exposing students to diverse ethnic and cultural groups, and fosters cultural sensitivity and advocacy.
Integrative Medicine Club (IMC)
Integrative Medicine Club (IMC) club is meant to embody the osteopathic model of viewing the body as a whole and looking through various lenses of treatment. The club provides students with information and opportunities to understand, explore and pursue various treatment modalities and aid in expanding knowledge on topics such as meditation, yoga, nutrition, Eastern medicine, and functional medicine.
Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG)
The purposes of IMIG are to obtain information about careers in internal medicine and promote the profession. IMIG strives to serve the medical school and the community.
Medical Research Club (MRC)
The Medical Research Club cultivates students’ intrigue of the medical research field through speaker lectures and the conducting of clinical/ benchtop research. This club allows students to learn and participate in graduate level studies and provides speakers offering guidance regarding the pursuit of a medical research opportunities.
Medical Students Advocates for Underserved Populations (MSAUP)
Medical Students Advocates for Underserved Populations (MSAUP) is a club that focuses on assessing the needs of underserved populations within the community, creating projects to help meet those needs, collecting and interpreting data based on the identified underserved population and developing partnerships with like-minded organizations in the community. We currently partner with Youth Futures and Switchpoint, local homeless shelters, for various projects. We also host Naloxone training, participate in an annual Giving Tree activity for the holidays, and co-sponsor several other events throughout the year.
PsychSIGN (+ STIGMA)
SIGN (Student Interest Group in Neurology) / PsychSIGN (Psychiatry Student Interest Group Network) aim to provide opportunities for RVU students to learn more about the fields of Neurology and Psychiatry as well as the role of allied health professions that support Neurologists and Psychiatrists. SIGN/PsychSIGN develops programs and events that allow students to participate in lecture-based learning, service-based activities, and hands-on clinical exposure activities.
STIGMA-UT
Student Initiative for Greater Mental Health Awareness is an interest group under SIGN/PsychSIGN, whose purpose is to promote awareness of mental health within all branches of medicine and host events allowing students to improve their knowledge and skill sets in addressing mental health concerns both in their private and professional lives. STIGMA aims to make mental health a conversation and further reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness among both medical students and the community, as well as support RVU students with mental health resources and guidance.
Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP)
This is a local chapter of the national Sigma Sigma Phi osteopathic honor society. Membership ensures inclusion in the national group. The vision of the club is to provide support for members to maintain academic and community requirements of Sigma Sigma Phi. The club also aims to provide meaningful group volunteer and group study opportunities for driven and successful RVU students.
Southern Utah Collegium Aesculapium (SUCA)
Collegium Aesculapium is an Organization for LDS and non-LDS, faith-centered medical professionals. The purpose of Southern Utah Collegium Aesculapium is to assist members in balancing professional, scientific, personal, and spiritual aspects of their life. This organization promotes the practice of nurturing the connection of spirit to the academic rigors of mind and body provided by student education. It enhances members’ understanding of the relationship between religious faiths and the medical profession. Through uplifting events and volunteer activities it fosters a wellness in the mind, body, and spirit of its members.
Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO)
The SAAO club is to teach, advocate and research the science, art and philosophy of osteopathic medicine, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic medicine, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic principles, practice and manipulative treatment in patient care.
Student Association of Military and Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS)
SAMOPS is a club dedicated to military students and the development of future military officers. Our mission is to promote osteopathy within the military and to be a successful group of leaders. We have a focus on a unified joint effort from military students of all branches to be fraternal, educational, informational, social, and philanthropic.
Student American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (SAOAO)
The Student American Osteopathic Association of Orthopedics is to form a bridge between Osteopathic Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery, in order to create a holistic functioning system to provide all the members with the opportunity to change the future of Osteopathic Orthopedic medicine by being well-educated and experienced health care practitioners.
Student Association of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (SA-ACOFP)
As the local chapter of the national Student Association of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, our purpose is to establish and promote a general understanding of the scope of services rendered by the family physician through the provision of a wide variety of activities including: skills workshops, ranging from suture labs to IUD insertion workshops; lecture series on topics such as business in medicine, patient advocacy, and full-scope family medicine; and volunteer events designed to improve the health and well-being of the local community. Benefits of membership include: nationally-recognized leadership opportunities, scholarships, COMBANK discounts, access to additional Board Prep materials, & resources to assist in successful residency matching, including a preceptor directory (to set up audition rotations), a residency program finder, and recorded webcasts on topics such as the single accreditation system & navigation of residency applications.
Community Outreach and Medical Mentors (COMM)
As a subcommittee of the RVUCOM-SU Chapter of SA-ACOFP, COMM is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing opportunities for student doctors to serve the community. We are committed to promoting understanding through education, to using our experience and knowledge to mentor future student doctors, and to inspiring young minds to pursue careers in science and medicine.
OB/GYN
As a subcommittee of SA-ACOFP, the OB/GYN Club was created for students who are interested in becoming OB/GYNs and, also, to educate our fellow students about the profession. We work directly with the St. George community to provide targeted women's health education as well as working with other student organizations on campus.
Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA)
The Student Osteopathic Medical Association is the official organization for osteopathic medical students and the affiliated student organization of the American Osteopathic Association. Its purpose is to advance the osteopathic profession, advocate for public health and welfare, and to represent the views and opinions of osteopathic medical students. SOMA affiliations with similar groups and chapters at other schools nationwide provide the largest network for information exchange and interaction available today. Locally, SOMA is involved in the school, hospital, and citizen communities through various service projects and socials.
Student Osteopathic Surgical Association (SOSA + OOIG & PSIG)
The Student Osteopathic Surgical Association club is the local chapter of the national SOSA and is the official student section of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. The SOSA club provides extracurricular surgical training and education to further cultivate students’ intrigue of the surgical field and better prepare students for their surgical rotation in their third year and beyond. Activities include opportunities to practice surgical related skills such as suturing and tying techniques, gowning and gloving, scrubbing, and using sterile technique in the operating room. This club offers guidance regarding the pursuit of a surgical specialty through guest speaker lectures. SOSA members can form subcommittees if they have specific interests in surgical specialties. Current subcommittees include Plastic Surgery Interest Group and Ophthalmology/Otolaryngology Interest Group.
Ultrasound Society Club (US)
Ultrasound Society Club is a club designed to build leadership in the use and understanding of ultrasound technology, specifically at bedside or point-of-care. Through education, the main goal is to teach and encourage proper use in the clinical setting.
